While fans of Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza's Spanish zombie pictures [Rec] and [Rec]2 are no doubt waiting for the upcoming, solo directed prequel and sequel films, they're going to have to wait just a little bit longer.

Balaguero, you see, is currently hard at work on an unrelated project, a home invasion thriller that previously went by the title of Flatmate but is now in production as Sleep Tight. Here's the synopsis:

We all know who our friends are but what about our acquaintances? Those people who play a small part in our everyday lives, how well do we really know them? And how well do they know us?

Director Jaume Balagueró ([REC], [REC]2) is back with a disturbing new psychological thriller that will leave audiences squirming in their seats.

With this new work, Balagueró takes a break from the more traditional horror format, exploring instead the more sophisticated mechanics of the suspense genre. SLEEP TIGHT's will lead the viewer deep inside into the warped mind of its protagonist, Cesar. As the tension builds, the audience is drawn further and further into the story, until reaching the final, devastating twist. Compelling from start to finish, Balagueró once again lives up to expectations in this fast paced and chilling new thriller.

With principal photography now under way the earlier concept art from the film has been followed by a gallery of eight new still images from the film itself and it's impressively atmospheric stuff. Check the gallery below.

Very happy to hear Balaguero has taken a break to make this film. For me REC2 was a letdown, hopefully the hiatus will inspire better things for the third film. In addition, this feature looks very promising...
