First Image Of Odin And Loki From Branagh's THOR

While images of Chris Hemsworth as Thor have been floating around for a while Marvel today released the first look at Anthony Hopkins as Odin and Tom Hiddleston as Loki and they threw in what I believe is the first look at Mjolnir - Thor's hammer - as well. It's a big, gray block. Not so exciting.

Really, I find most of this more silly than exciting. I've been openly skeptical about a Thor feature right from the beginning, always believing it would be the most difficult of the entire Marvel canon to adapt to the screen in any way that wouldn't come off as just plain unbelievable. And Anthony Hopkins in buff armor is unbelievable. As is the entire look of virtually every design element in this image. Yes, I know that it matches the designs of the comics but guess what? They're dropping these guys into the real world and unless they're playing for comedy I fear this is going to fail on a massive scale. Which is what has happened every other time director Kenneth Branagh has attempted to make a mainstream film, particularly one involving special effects.

The Clash of the Titans remake had better get-ups for its gods. These guys LOOK like they're playing dress up. Maybe these thing look better up close. Maybe they just don't film well. Whatever they case is these outfits scream "plastic space pirate armor" instead "ancient badass Norse god". This is the worst costume decision Marvel has made since it turned the X-Men into a biker gang. Boo.

I don't know about this shot. Beside the fact that Odin is grinning like an idiot I'm still not sold about those costumes. I was kind of...satisfied by the look of the armor in the last shot they posted of Thor but now that I see that it's a fashion trend on Asgard I'm not so sure. It's beginning to look a bit Power Ranger. I hope they make them look very metallic on screen during post or something. And I know it's a detail but the Cape on Thor is way too freaking red. It's going to look like shit on screen I think. The one on Odin is just right in my opinion and I'm not sure I want to see helmets matching those costumes anymore

Nice cosplay skills there, where is the convention taking place?

I think they look fine. The armor looks like finely-crafted metal to me, and what else would you expect from gods. Mortal norsemen may have been rough-hewn, but there's no reason their gods can be just as badass and still have the best-of-the-best when it comes to wardrobe and armor. And Mjolnir looked fine when it showed up after the IRON MAN 2 credits. Also, things can look quite a bit different between a still image and the movie screen. Anyhoo...

i was looking forward to this movie more than any other marvel flick coming up.
with every picture they've released, my excitement about this movie has faded.
unless the trailer looks crazy insane great, im over it and back to just waiting for dr strange.

armour looks sweet but come on man.
It's meant to be taking place back in old century!
those costume looks like 21st century looking costumes:/

user-pic

What do you mean "old century"? It's based on the comic book not the myth.

I think its about impossible to make a look for this comic book version of Asgard that nobody will find something to complain about...The outfits are too shiny for you yet the hammer is too simple? I for one wish they would have gone with a rougher dark ages kind of style. But I wont write this one off just yet. I guess they have gone more for a shiny heavenly otherwordly kind of approach. In motion and with character it might work. And I don't think its fair to condemn Branaghs other mainstream attempts, they had some nice elements to them.
And hey, the Xmen biker look ended up working pretty good for most people. Theses norse gods do look a bit like quasi medieval Iron Men though.

Well, it looks like they should've burnt this. It should've been obvious that it was a horrible idea to put Branagh up for this film as the guy is best suited for obscure Shakespearian failures. Seriously, that image looks abysmal.

To be fair most of Branagh's Shakespeare adaptations are very good. His ability to adapt old dialogue and fuse old influences with the modern was the one part of his choice as director that I really liked.

user-pic

Looks like a Flash Gordon remake. I am liking the new Brian Blessed.

I respect Branagh when it comes to more "classic" productions (Shakespeare, Wallander. etc) but this is not looking good.

user-pic

"obscure Shakespearian failures".

Has that guy just watched Henry V, Much ado about nothing and the full version of Hamlet?

Obscure??????

Failures??????

I say nonsense.

@GeneralError: Agreed that it's not supposed to take place in "old century" but the comic itself is based on the myth. And all of the artwork from the comics that we have seen so far seems to have set the tone of the character itself as being very rooted to its Nordic mythology. So I think the movie would be much more interesting if Thor is fleshed out as a thunder god who goes to today Earth and try and adjust himself whilst battling out Loki's minions. Hence the language barrier from the comics and the old looking (how to train your dragon) costumes. I mean with THOSE costumes we see up there the whole concept of Viking gods and goddesses ceases to exist and the gods are checking out their dominions with iPads in their hands!

user-pic

Thor and company has always struck me as looking rather silly in the original comics. If the tone is right the film could work like some sort of Flash Gordon throw-back picture.

user-pic

The problem with that is that none of the other Marvel movies strike that tone and with all of them existing in the same universe and - particularly with Thor crossing with a number of other characters in The Avengers - there needs to be a degree of tonal consistency.

user-pic

I never enjoyed Thor as a comic book hero, he never worked for me. So I, for one, am looking forward to the film to see if it can win me over and make me want to check out the mythology behind the god

Could be a nice action movie. and if thats Loki on the right, should he have huge ass horns and be blonde? anyway im not gonna knock this over 1 photo. the armor kinda fits the comic turned movie feel a la xmen
