Well, that was quick. Mack just posted images from upcoming Korean action thriller The Man From Nowhere yesterday and what should arrive this morning but the first trailer.

The Korean film world - particularly the big budget, action oriented end of the Korean film world - has been dominated by a pair of leading men for well over a decade now. Yeah, Kwon Sang Woo dabbles in this world - and I wish he'd do more as it's where he's done his best work - and Ryoo Seung-Beom is certainly a notable player but for true, high end leading men it's been Lee Byun-hyung and Song Kang-Ho ever since the Korean wave first broke. And while I'm certainly a fan of both, it's high time for some new blood. Observers on the 'Who's next?' front have had their eye on actor Won Bin for a good while now and with The Man From Nowhere he may have finally arrived. here's the synopsis:

An ex-special agent CHA Tae-sik's only connection to the rest of the world is a little girl, So-mi, who lives nearby. So-mi's mother, Hyo-jeong smuggles drugs from a drug trafficking organization and entrusts Tae-sik with the product, without letting him know. When the traffickers find out they kidnap both Hyo-jeong and So-mi. Mistaking Tae-sik for another mule, the brothers that lead the gang promise to release Hyo-jeong and So-mi if Tae-sik makes a delivery for them. After much consideration, Tae-sik makes the decision to face the outside world in order to rescue So-mi. At the same time, Hyo-jeong's disemboweled body is discovered, and Tae-sik realizes that So-mi's life may also be in danger. In the process, he discovers that their drug ring operates around kidnapped children. Stumbling upon a factory where the brothers have children's organs removed to accommodate the drugs, Tae-sik rescues one child just before surgery and becomes enraged at the prospect So-mi may already be dead. Tae-sik prepares for a battle with Man-sik and Jong-sik, putting his own life at risk.
Yes, it's wildly melodramatic and over the top but give it a second and take a look at the new trailer. It's also very stylich and very well made and Won has all the charisma you could possibly ask of a leading man. Color me intrigued.

That's a pretty cool teaser.

This looks like one of the best from Korea this year. Won Bin is a beautiful looking geezer, the hero role really suits him.

I think what really sells this one for me is how natural the kid comes across. If they messed that up the whole thing would fall apart. That and the leap onto the hood of the car is pretty awesome.

I may be misreading, but I love the simplicity of the (actual) Korean title: Mister

Here's hoping that the film stays away from what many Korean films tend to do which is hit all the right emotional cues, and then drag them on about 8 beats too many...

And yes...the leap onto the hood of the car is way awesome. : )

That teaser was I all I needed to see to know that this is right up my alley. It's been a while since I've watched any new Korean stuff. I've just been catching Park Chan-wook's stuff. Looks like that'll change with this. And I'll go ahead and echo the comments about the car-leaping.

Won Bin simultaneously broke a lot of hearts and earned quite some respect when he announced his intentions of fulfilling his military service some years ago, risking to put his acting carreer on permanent hold. Seems like he's in great comeback form, with first Madeo and now this.

Loved the little girl in A Brand New Life.

Keeping an eye on this for sure.

The little girl (Sae Ron Kim) can act! Recently viewed A Brand New Life and she broke my heart. Loved it.
