Can Shane Carruth top Primer with his long awaited Follow-up?

by Kurt Halfyard, June 23, 2010 8:13 AM

atopiary.jpgWith the J.J. Abram's type promise offered by the teaser poster on the left, and the known fact that writer/director Shane Carruth's first film is arguably one of the best time travel movies ever made, some enterprising and wealthy producer had better damn well jump on this project pronto.

Despite the full festival and eventual cult success of Primer, the engineer and mathie turned filmmaker has been quite silent ever since, although quiet rumblings have been around for about a year that he was cooking up something worthy of a follow up. Now The Playlist has gotten a hold of this script, A Topiary, and are scratching their heads in an attempt to summarize the film. Do you want to know more:

"The main story, at first ambiguous in its relation to the prologue, revolves around ten boys aged seven to eleven living in a small rural town. The boys are in possession of a mysterious black box which in turn creates mysterious white discs. The group of kids are at once puzzled and fascinated by the nature of the box, and eventually manipulate the discs into other peculiarly named artifacts (petals, arcs, fronds, etc.). Their creations and constructions lead up to their manufacturing of seemingly sentient quasi-mechanical beings. Almost as if 'Topiary' were an abstract arthouse take on Pokémon, you can imagine the competition and troubles the beings create amongst the children."

Intrigued?  Oh yes.

Intriguing indeed!
I absolutely loved "Primer", not because it had an intricate, clever and convoluted time-travel story, but because it used that story to show something I had never seen before: a glimpse of the hell these people had created for themselves by making their lives as impossible to follow as the plot.

The fact that the plot in the last half is not a barrel of nonsense but actually "fits" (after several re-watches, a flipchart, coffee, aspirin and lots and lots of hard work...) is just a nice bonus, and in no means necessary for enjoying the film.

So bring on "A Topiary"!

But the question arises: just as all of Neil Marshall's films concern people lost in enemy territory, will all of Shane Carruth's movies revolve around mysterious boxes?

I've been waiting a long time for this one. At first there were rumours of the follow-up being a strictly romance genre, but this one sounds way more exciting. I am a huge fan of Primer and hope that he manages to keep up that level of storytelling.

I wonder if David Sullivan is in this one too. I also wonder if the discs are capable of creating a new black box ;)

Yeah, I saw Primer was back when it played Toronto, and Carruth was talking about some romance that had to due with 18th century shipping lines or something. This sounds infinitely better.

It's about time. He's a damn good actor also.
