Given the news about the new upcoming entries in the [REC] franchise I felt the need to check in on the status of Jaume Balaguero's other announced new project, the thriller Flatmate, now apparently re-titled Sleep Tight. And not only did I get good news on that but also got a few words on the new [REC] flicks.
First, Sleep Tight:
As for the [REC] films, they're going the prequel / sequel route, which makes fantastic sense given the mythology introduced in the first picture and brought more to the fore in the second. Paco Plaza will be handling the prequel angle with [REC] Genesis - yup, the origin story - with Balaguero handling the big finale with [REC] Apocalypse. And, yes, both directors will remain somewhat involved in each others' projects even though they will not be fully co-directed like the originals.
First, Sleep Tight:
Happily for fans of Balaguero, the [REC] plans are not going to affect Sleep Tight at all. Sleep Tight will shoot first - it is currently slated to begin production at the end of May - with work on his [REC] picture beginning after Sleep Tight has released.Marcos works as a doorman in a Barcelona apartment building. Happiness eludes him and he feels the need to reaffirm his reasons for living on a daily basis. He goes about his day to day work mainly unnoticed by the residents of the building, but he pays close attention to them.
He knows all the intimate details of their lives, everything about them, especially one of them. Clara King is a happy-go-lucky young woman, who always looks on the positive side of things. Her cheery attitude to life makes Marcos's skin crawl.
He won't be happy until he has wiped that smile of her face once and for all, because Marcos feeds off other people's pain. He delights in the unhappiness and anguish of others and he loves nothing more than to plant the seed of misery and watch it grow.
In Clara he has found the perfect target, and he will go to extreme lengths to make her life miserable. But Marcos is starting to get a bit too cocky, and soon his carefully thought out plans will start to unravel... Luckily for him, he has one last ace up his sleeve
