Brilliance or madness? Japan's Toei Studios have announced plans to re-release Kinji Fukasaku's 2000 cult hit Battle Royale on big screens in Japan. The last film the legendary director would complete before his death of cancer - he died early in production of the sequel - Battle Royale would become a global phenomenon, the story of teens forced onto an island to fight each other to the death would strike a potent chord with audiences all around the globe and launch the careers of a number of its youthful stars. The film is so potent, in fact, that Toei has apparently refused several purchase offers from US distributors over fears that they may be sued in the event of any copycat crimes. Remember, it was originally released in the Columbine era.

The re-release itself is fantastic news. The part that will raise eyebrows? Toei are converting the film to 3D before doing it.

Weigh in below: good thing or bad thing? And, if good, what are some other old titles you'd like to see given the 3D treatment?

A 3D update to a movie that we already know kicks ass? YES PLEASE.

You know what, no! No, no, no. Why would it in any way benefit from getting a 3D make-over? The film itself, while amazing, has that typical look to the image most Japanese films have; very soft and not as sharp as one would hope. Maybe a damn good remastering of the print might change that but there's nothing in the film that would stand out in 3D. God I hate 3D it's such a gimmick.

that's stupid man!
not unless the movie was shot with 3D camera effect thing then it'll look nice.

this movie will just look Clash of the Titan

I would like to see this classic on bluray soon, who cares about 3D!!
