We see very little genre film emerge out of Israel but one of my favorite shorts in all of last year was a Tarkovsky-influenced piece from there titled When It Will Be Silent. A student film directed by Dan Sachar it was shot in the no-man's land between Israel and Jordan, and it uses the barren region as an incredibly effective setting for it's post apocalyptic world. Simple, beautiful and tragic, this is stellar stuff and Sachar has just put the entire short online. Check it below.

Yes! Ever since Dan sent this to me last summer or so I've been waiting to get a chance to share it with people. Good on ya, Dan!
Simple yet elegant.
Nicely done.
hm whoever was in charge of the props should have paid more attention. the gas mask was more than loose in most shots. its implied the guy died because he took it off. really he would have been dead all along wearing it so loose, there would be no point.
Anyone know what camera he used to shoot this with?
Thanks for the comments guys!
Patric, duly noted.
jasondavis1, I shot it with the simple Sony HVR-Z7 (HDV). I have successfully achieved the low DOF with the use of FULL ND filters, therefore the iris was completely open.
Dan.
