SXSW 2010: MONSTERS Grabbed by Magnet

by Peter Martin, March 17, 2010 10:13 AM

Gareth Edwards' Monsters, a languid, dreamy, and unconventional alien invasion picture, has been picked up by Magnet Releasing for U.S. distribution. The film had its world premiere at a midnight screening at SXSW on Saturday night.

During the Q&A afterwards, Edwards alluded to hopeful negotiations for U.S. distribution, and it all came together rather quickly. The press release says it happened "within hours" and the deal was made "against stiff competition from other distributors." Vertigo Films backed Monsters and has UK rights.

Magnet will have to decide what approach to take in marketing the film. It's more of a road / relationship movie with the backdrop of monsters roaming a contaminated zone between Mexico and the U.S. The visual effects are super high quality, and stand up to close inspection -- I sat in the second row, and all the effects looked absolutely convincing.

I think there is definitely an audience for the film, as long as expectations for seeing epic, lengthy battles between aliens and humans are downplayed. Monsters can stand on its own merits and I'm glad more people will be able to see it. My review is linked below.
