Though met with somewhat mixed reviews there's no doubt that Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook's vampire tale Thirst has been one of the most anticipated and talked about titles of the past year and now the impatient will get their chance to see it with the arrival of the Korean 3-disc DVD release on March 17th. Subtitles? The feature itself has them, though I wouldn't bank on them being on any of the special features. Included in the feature set, though, is a fantastic - and perplexingly unrelated - animated short titled Dust Kid. I have no idea why this short is in there but I'm glad it is ... we gave it one of the big awards when I did jury duty at PiFan during the summer ...

what's great about this set is that it includes the long-awaited extended cut of the film on disc 2. i've been waiting for word on whether or not the korean blu-ray release that comes out on the same day will have the extended cut as well. i'm hoping it will, but i'm guessing that much like the recent korean blu-ray release of 'the good, the bad, the weird,' it will only include the shorter version of the film...
So maybe Thirst isn't such a train wreck?. Felt like three separate films, all fine, but clashed horribly when placed together. The tonal shifts were far too jarring and often confusing. I sure do the extended cut fleshes (heh) things out to soften the loopy tones. Guess I'll have to wait several years to see a subtitled, region 1 release though right? Let's remember that the 5 disc Vengeance trilogy box set hits US shelves in two weeks!!!!
The US release should be coming pretty quick, actually, since this was co-financed by Focus. Don't know if it'll include the extended version, though.
