The narrative short Junko's Shamisen, which is the directorial debut of Toronto-based filmmaker Sol Friedman, is screening at the SXSW Film Festival in a few weeks. This short mixes live action with various animation techniques, including cell, stop-motion, and computer, to tell the story of girl in feudal Japan who seeks revenge for her grandfather's death. Junko's Shamisen should have a long life on the festival circuit because its synthesis of various influences (e.g., Kabuki, manga, samurai films) is clever and visually arresting.
