How Do You Like Your IP MAN? With Sammo Versus Donnie Or Sammo Versus Yuen Biao?

If you find yourself confused by the sheer volume of Ip Man related projects in the works right now, you're not the only one.  There is, of course, the original Wilson Yip directed Ip Man, in which Donnie Yen stars as the legendary martial arts master. That film was so successful that director Yip was immediately brought on to shoot a sequel, which is wrapping up right around now.  Then there's Wong Kar Wai's rival Ip Man project, titled The Great Master, announced years ago but just getting started now.  And then, from the same producers as the Yip feature there is Herman Yau's The Legend Is Born: Ip Man. No Donnie Yen in this one but Sammo Hung and Fan Siu-Wong - who both appear in both Yip films - are here along with the iconic Yuen Biao.

The trailer for this one quietly appeared a couple days back and is looking quite good, actually. Production values are solid for a Herman Yau film and the caliber of martial arts looks quite high.  Check it below.

It looks like this takes place before the events on Ip Man, is this suppose to be taken as a sort of a prequel to Ip Man? Either way, the fights look quite good.

Well it doesn't have anything to do with Wilson Yip or Donnie Yen so I guess you just have to consider it as a stand alone film. Looks real promising too.

Besides Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung having featured in arguably the best wing chun movie prior to Ip Man (Prodigal Son), this movie has something no other wing chun-film has had. Ip ****** Chun! For those of you who aren't familiar with the name, he is Ip Man's firstborn son. Having him take on the role of "grouchy old kung fu sifu" seems like a stroke of genius.

Hopefully it means that he meddled a bit in the choreography too. Although the quick glimpses don't seem all that realistic.

I really don't understand what they are trying to do with this film. Despite having a solid cast, this production smacks entirely of coattail-riding for a quick buck.

Greensleeves in the soundtrack? What the heck?? haha
