For my money, Thailand's Thanakorn Pongsuwon is one of the more interesting cult film makers in the world today. An unabashed lover of genre film with an ability to wring the absolute maximum mileage out of his concept and characters, Pongsuwon first got our notice with Opopatika before moving on to combat-basketball film Fireball.
Well, he's at it again.
Pongsuwon announced his intention to create a Fireball prequel almost as soon as the original film debuted and already he has cut together a promo reel for display to potential buyers. A mix of temp footage and more polished work that will likely be included in the final film, the reel showcases several new environments - the new fight arena is fantastic - improved camera work, and an evolution of the sport as it developed on US military bases in Thailand during the Vietnam War, moving from the traditional Thai sport of sepak takraw into the form it occupied in the first film.
We're hoping to be able to share some of this footage soon - not all as they don't want the temp stuff or any plot spoilers in public - so keep watching for it.

Is he keeping the camera still and backing up, just a little bit, this time, during the fight scenes? I get nauseous thinking about the shaky zoom cam in Fireball.
Yep. He still keeps you close to the action but the camera is tamed down a bit. The guy who played the team captain in the original is starring again, too.
Yay! 9 Million Sam rocks.
