EFM 2010: AGNOSIA Astounds.

In the world of Spanish genre film this year it has been the Guillermo Del Toro produced effort Julia's Eyes that has been winning most of the advance attention but - while that film certainly looks just fine in its own right - the film that really deserves the anticipation is Eugenio Mira's Agnosia.

A supernatural thriller from the producers of Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage and Hierro, details have been intentionally scarce on this one with the creators being very careful to avoid the risk of spoilers.  And, honestly, even after seeing the lengthy promo reel being presented by Filmax here at the EFM I still can't say much more of anything as far as what the film is actually about.  But I can say that in terms of visuals and drawing the viewer in to a unique vision of the world, Agnosia is the best thing I have seen here in Berlin by a mile.  Nothing else is even close. The period-set photography is absolutely sumptuous, the visuals immediately striking, and the cast very strong.  And with Antonio Trashorras - the writer of Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone - responsible for the script I have no worries in that department either.
