Van Damme to fight in Kickboxing...for Real!? Seriously, this ain't no Joke

by Al Young, January 27, 2010 6:55 PM

Sometimes fact REALLY is stranger than fiction, eh.  According to ESPN, aging action star Jean-Claude Van Damme plans to re-enter the ring to dispense some major Van Damage.  No, this ain't the sequel to Kickboxer we're talking about here, this is reality, ladies and gentleman.  The opponent?  Olympian gold medalist Thai boxer Somluck Kamsing, age 37 who supposedly holds over 300 bouts under his belt.  Some may recognized him for his film appearances in the Thai actioner Born to Fight and the Director's cut of Fearless with Jet Li.  Taking a cue from Steven Seagal: Lawman, Van Damme will get his own reality show that will follow his daily training leading up to the fight.  While I'm not sure its such a good idea considering "The Muscles from Brussels" is pushing almost 50 and his actual fight experience is questionable, I gotta give him his due for having the balls to step up and put his ass on the line.

The kickboxing match will be held in Macau, China on an unspecific date in 2010.  You'll find the video of the press conference with the announcement embedded below.

Wow.
I don't know what to say. It sounds like suicide.

Appropriately enough, Van Damme should use the "Fight to Survive" theme from the Bloodsport soundtrack as his entrance music. Heh. If hes lands a KO from his trademark telegraphic flying split kick, I would go apesh*t. The guy he's fighting is no joke so he better be careful.

Power to Van Damme. What a man.
