Nash Edgerton's debut feature The Square is set to open in US cinemas on April 9 2010, after being picked up by indie distributor Apparition on the back of buzz from its 2009 SXSW screenings.
Edgerton, who diversified from his job as a stuntman in Australia (notably on the Star Wars prequels and Matrix sequels) to become an acclaimed short film director (Lucky and Spider are his best known shorts) has most recently shot to new acclaim in the US directing Bob Dylan's two most recent music videos.
Written by Nash's actor brother Joel, with Matt Dabner, The Square is a modern noir thriller of the manipulative lover/stolen bag o' cash variety. On it's 2008 cinema release in Australia it received universal rave reviews from critics, despite its morbidly bleak tone.
The film stars a bevy of awesome Australian actors, including David Roberts in the lead, Claire Van Der Boom, the always brilliant Anthony Hayes, Hanna Mangan Lawrence and Joel Edgerton.
Apparition has released an early poster for the film (left), and jazzed up the film's website, ahead of the April release - they said they also intend to screen Nash's short film Spider before The Square in what Apparition honcho Bob Berney calls "a perfect noir cocktail".
Current Apparition releases include The Young Victoria and Jane Campion's Bright Star.
Nash is one part of the talented Blue Tongue Films collective, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, which also includes David Michôd (who has his debut feature Animal Kingdom in Sundance 2010), Spencer Susser (who has his own debut feature Hesher in Sundance as well) and Luke Doolan - whose latest short film Miracle Fish has been shortlisted for an Academy Award.
