As far as debuting your first feature goes, Australian writer-director David Michôd has enjoyed a pretty astounding first week, with universal rave reviews and a US distribution deal reportedly looming, after his film Animal Kingdom premiered at Sundance last Friday.
Now, courtesy of Australian poster designer Jeremy Saunders (he who designed the infamous Antichrist 'scissors' poster) we can reveal the teaser/sales poster for the crime drama - an abstract concept but one which is purely intended for use at the various markets and festivals the film will no doubt be travelling to.
It may not be intentional, but I love how the tagline 'a crime story' riffs on Saunders' poster for 2009 indigenous film Samson & Delilah, which emblazoned the words 'a love story' across the poster for added effect.
Animal Kingdom is a sprawling crime saga set in the underworld of Melbourne, Australia. Pope Cody, an armed robber on the run from a gang of renegade detectives, is in hiding, surrounded by his roughneck friends and family. Soon, Pope's nephew, Joshua "J" Cody arrives and moves in with his estranged relatives.
When tensions between the family and the police reach a bloody peak, "J" finds himself at the center of a cold-blooded revenge plot that turns the family upside down.
