Yes, I've been on the road all day so I'm late with this but the Golden Globes have come and gone and here's your chance to chat about it. Honestly, other than the Avatar win - which has more to do with it making bags of money than being the actual best movie, I think - I don't see a lot to squawk about. Really, how do you complain about an awards show that honors Jeff Bridges, Robert Downey Jr and Michael C Hall?

Avatar surprised me really. I thought the globes were kinda more serious then the oscar, but so what?
I'm glad Haneke did it, but Waltz wasn't as good as August Diehl in Basterds, although his role was pretty short.
Agreed. Also on Enter The Void even though this has nothing to do with it.
I don't mind "Avatar" winning the Golden Globe, just as I had no problem with the "Return of the King" nod by the Acadamy 6 years ago.
Even though I have a huge number of complaints about "Return of the King" and don't rate the film itself all that highly in my personal favorites, I am in awe of what Peter Jackson accomplished. His dream of what the Lord of the Rings saga should look like may not be mine but the fact that he managed to get it off the ground is incredible. In sheer spectacle, the Minas Tirith battle knocked me out of my seat. That is worthy of recognition just as much as a good performance, or the devastation felt after a rock-solid drama.
While I acknowledge the flaws in "Avatar" it consistently provided me with a very high level of entertainment. It managed to actually knock me INTO my seat and say "Stay there!". Simplified story or not, the way Cameron tells it with his usual mix of logic and impeccable editing got to me. Again, I might add. James Cameron is still my favorite living American director and in my opinion the success of "Avatar" is fully earned.
What should have won over Avatar (that actually could have been included in the awards)? Avatar won because it is huge, amazing, and the future of CG technology. Lord of the Rings and the new Star Wars look like crap compared to it, and I can't think of anything else to compare it to. And it's not as if the movie completely sucks and the budget went down the toilet, there are extremely effective images that can't be made without skillful direction and craft. Sorry but you can't really deny this.
I'm most pleased to see that an actual comedy won the best comedy award. The Hangover definitely got its props from the GG's and the Critics Choice awards.
