First Look At The New DOCTOR WHO In Action. Younger. Prettier. Gunnier.

by Todd Brown, January 3, 2010 3:11 PM

With the David Tennant era of Doctor Who now well and officially over, the BBC have rolled out their first trailer for the Matt Smith era of Doctor-dom.  Plus side:  The Weeping Angels are back.  Their original episode (Blink) is one of the best bit sof Who ever put on screen so this is a good thing indeed.  Negative side: I object to the firearm.  Yes, I know guns have been used on occasion in the past but one of the things that distinguishes Doctor Who from pretty much every piece of American science fiction ever is his dislike of firearms and I really don't like seeing one so prominently featured in the marketing.  Check the trailer below!

I suppose I should include the ever-present Daleks in the negative column, too ... how many times were they defeated in the Tennant / Eccleston years? This is well past silly by this point ...

Well, Doctor Who had a great run these past few years. I guess it's time to bury the series for good. Just wish it would go out with more bang than the cringe-inducing whimper this new series will obviously be.

I'm not prepared to write it off. Moffatt is a better writer by far than Davies ...

My problem isn't with the writers. Who is the one I can't take seriously. No, that wasn't a question. While watching that trailer I was expecting him to hike up his shirt and sparkle and tell someone he's so beautiful...

Yeah, I can't shake the feeling their targeting the Twilight crowd a bit obviously. My hope, though, is that this is purely a decision made by the marketers and not a reflection of the actual writing on the show ... I mean, you could have cut a VERY similar trailer using Tennant footage as well.

Loki, I absolutely LOVED Tennant as the Doctor and I think he could have been the pinnacle if he wasn't so frequently let down by dodgy writing. The good episodes were brilliant but the signal:noise ratio got progressively worse as the years went on ... I'm hoping things improve on the writing front with Moffat in charge ...

The way I see it, with Davies and Tennant you had lesser writing and a great doctor. With Moffat and Smith, I expect you'll have great writing and a lesser doctor.

To be honest, I'm happier now Tennant has moved on from Doctor Who. Remembering back to his performance in Secret Smile, a TV production where he played an obsessive ex-boyfriend, it was really something special. Hopefully he'll move on and take on more challenging roles.

As far as I can see this character was made for James Nesbitt rather than this Smith fellow. The Tennent Era was the pinnacle of the the DW universe, it's all downhill from here.

Sweet ... composer just spilled that Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen) is back on the writing team this season and his stuff is always solid ...

Tennant was a very good doctor and I am sad to see him go but that finale was a prime example of the worst of the series. Camp is fine, but the whole whatsists and the deus ex machina bits were lazy. Yes, I know it is a kid's show but when compared to the greater episodes, it was quite a bit of a slap in the face except that it was held up by Tennant himself.

I am not prepared to dismiss the new Doctor until he's had his chance. Smith looks like he embraces the fun and I have no problem with making the doctor younger and, I admit, I see the obvious appeal of his companion too.

Moffat IS a much better writer but now we get to see if he is also a good show runner too. He can't write them all - can he?
