First Look at Live Action GANTZ

by Al Young, January 4, 2010 4:53 PM

A 15-second TV spot for the upcoming live action adaptation of Gantz has been broadcast on the Nippon Network Television of Japan and thankfully, a viewer have captured it and uploaded it on Youtube.  In the video, we get our first brief glimpse at the mysterious black sphere known as "Gantz", accompany with the "participants" wearing the black enhancement suit.

Budgeted at $45 million US, the film is based on Hiroya Oku's bestselling sci-fi action manga that tells the story of a "young Tokyo college student who is reanimated after a deadly subway accident. Kei Kurono and his friend Katou Masaru go on violent, seemingly endless missions at the behest of an unseen host."  As mention in our earlier report, it will be split into two parts with director Shinsuke Sato (The Princess Blade) on the helm and the two main characters, Kei and Katou, being played by J-popstar Kazunari Ninomiyais and Kenichi Matsuyama respectively.

The film is currently in production.  Toho plans to tentatively release the first part in the winter of early 2011 while the second part will follow in the spring.

Nothing much to see in this clip except a huge black ball. No pun intended. I also find it odd that they are marketing this film by playing up the 2 male pop idol leads. The manga is a seinen series, targeted at young men...

Maybe it's a Japanese thing.

A black ball and the title...
I can hear the mad fanboys already: "Oh no, they've used the wrong font!"

:/
I liked this anime for the first few seasons, because of the humour, jokes and realism. But it got so dumb after they left the building and living their own life. It just became retarded, senseless and stupid.

I mean I just hated some dumb bits because it felt too much like hentai type movie, with stupid things like "I want to be your pet, I have no where else to go" oh please:/

I just like the realism reaction of the kid, because if you are a teen you'd think and say something similar. For example how he wanted to sleep with the girl and had a funny idea of buying a condom. When he thought of what will happen he got so excited and rushed to the corner shop.

I just hope this movie will refine the stupid teen aimed anime stuff and make it more realistic and mature.

There are only 2 seasons made. And the consensus is that the anime is pretty weak and awful compared to the manga series, which is pretty awesome.

They've changed the age of the characters for the movie. Kurono is now a just graduated college student looking for a job. I don't think they would make him a virgin but I do hope he is still a bit horny.

but the anime intro/opening is sweet, never gets old

Correction. Only 1 pop idol.
I don't think they released Matsuyama Kenichi's "Strawberry Kisses" in DMC soundtrack.. or did they?

Probably they are playing up that one pop idol because 1) he's not that pretty for a boyband member, 2) Clint Eastwood, Letters From Iwo Jima, etc, etc.., 3) they wanted to turn it safe for general viewers so the wholesome pop-idol boy is their scape goat. The fanboys might get used with the idea of Gantz without much boobies by 2011. Just my 2cents.

I heard Yoshitaka Yuriko will be starring in Gantz as well.

Oh, I've pretty much given up on expecting breasts in this movie version. The suits won't be anywhere near as form-fitting as the manga. However, making Gantz general viewer-friendly by removing the limb amputations, mutilations, and exploding torsoes is simply blasphemy.

IA. Gantz is no Gantz without exploding torsoes.

Mind you, when I finally checked out the first few volumes of the manga I was surprised to see how similar it was to the anime. The full first season and the first half of the second one nearly copied the books frame-by-frame.

The manga, although although visually stunning, quickly turned into incoherent tripe (vampires?!?). I would be very surprised if even the writer knows where it's going.

But then again it IS very visual so it could work.
