Has Jackie Chan sold his soul to the Hollywood devil? Two clips for THE SPY NEXT DOOR

by Al Young, January 9, 2010 6:21 PM

[UPDATE:  Added "Bike fight" clip.]

There was a time long ago when I use to get very pumped to find out what upcoming projects is next for Jackie Chan but ever since Jackie gone to Hollywood, my reaction to his output there is usually met with extreme caution or the shaking of my head in disbelief, followed by "Oh no, what did Jackie do this time!?' or "C'mon Jackie, your better than this crap!"  The sad situation is akin to watching a dear friend who was once a beautiful classy dancer degenerated into an abused stripper for a sleazy boss.  Its really heartbreaking and depressing to see someone I care a great deal about get the short end of the stick.  To illustrate my point, there is clip released online for the major-disaster-waiting-to-happen The Spy Next Door.  Ouch!  Why oh why, Jackie!?

Well, not all hope is lost.  I'm still eagerly anticipating the latest news for Chinese Zodiac, an action adventure that is supposedly to start filming in 2010 (see previous post here).  Why I'm excited for this project? Its the first time in years that Jackie Chan will be sitting on the director chair which means he gets to call all the shots and there is no pencil pushing Hollywood execs getting in the way of his creative genius.  With unforgettable directorial films like Drunken Master 2 and Police Story, you know Jackie is going to pull all stops to ensure its up to par with his high standards of quality action and stuntwork.

Check out the clips embedded below if you dare.

Saw the trailer when I went to see "The Princess & the Frog". All I could do was frown and shake my head. Tis a shame.

It's kind of like watching the underwater fights in FIRST STRIKE in slow motion.

Since when has Chan been attacking women? Oh and clearly the cat is the best part of that clip, you can take that how you will.

"Since when has Chan been attacking women? "

About the same time he started to attack kids (see karate kid remake trailer)

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS features a solid Jackie Chan/Karen Mok brawl and is seemingly perpetually underappreciated as a tonal throwback to the old Golden Harvest Chinese New Year all-star extravaganzas. I need to make a "Most Unfairly Denigrated Films of the Aughts" list so that 80 DAYS can wind up near, if not at, the top.

Jackie Chan is teh proud of chinese people, who was famous all over the world and ,still loves his motherland.2009 is cow year, and a harvest year for him.

Have you not seen The Myth, New Police Story or the trailer for Little Big Soldier? He's still making decent movies in HK. Granted he hasn't done anything as great as Drunken Master 2 lately, but give the old man a break. Didn't he say he was going to slow down in 5 years & stick with producing/directing like 10 years ago?

Anyways, I definitely try to avoid his Hollywood vehicles.

I saw 'The Spy Next Door' at a screening yesterday and it was laughably terrible. Jackie Chan is supposed to be in love with Amber Valetta and their chemistry is the least convincing I've ever seen in a film.

Also, everybody he fights clearly has no martial arts training of any kind. Jackie's fights with the "bad guys" remind me of when the Power Rangers used to fight the puddies. Terrible. Just terrible.

I only enjoyed the music, it was really incredible.

At least they managed to shoehorn in the Wilhelm scream in the second video.

Its Jackie's style! Nothing new. Nothing to complain about if you've enjoyed his fumbling kung fu act since 'Drunken Kungfu' years.
