Though scarcely anything is known of upcoming Mexican / Spanish drama Biutiful so far it is immediately notable for two reasons.
First, it is the latest feature from Alejandro Innaritu, the man behind Amores Perros, Babel and 21 Grams. Innaritu has a flawless track record so far and anything he is involved in is instantly noteworthy.
Second, cast in the lead of the film is No Country For Old Men, The Sea Inside and Between Your Legs star Javier Bardem. And if the prospect of Innaritu working with Bardem isn't enough to get you a little excited ... well, you're probably not watching the right movies.
What do we know? The synopsis released on the IMDB is not particularly helpful, stating only that "A man involved in illegal dealing is confronted by his childhood friend, who is now a policeman." The production company backing the film gives a bit more: "At the heart of Biutiful is the intimate, powerful story of Uxbal, a man who finds himself desperately alone, trying to maintain his balance between survival in a marginal neighborhood and safeguarding the future of his young children who are floating aimlessly through life." Yes, Bardem is playing Uxbal.
And while details are still slim, we do have the first two images released from the film in the gallery below.

Babel was a let down, but still much to look forward to here. You should check out Golden Balls (Juan Jose Bigas Luna) for another great Bardem performance. The Sea Inside is a high though. Just a shame so many will only know him from Vicky Cristina... yawn
The most amazing Bardem for my money was Romeo Dolorosa in Perdita Durango. What a crazy crazy character. Bardem is a true chameleon, good at playing all kinds of personalities, noble, creepy, or maniacal. But after seeing him as Romeo I think he would be the one perfect actor to play Lobo the last Czarnian. I hope Guy Rithcie is still going to direct Lobo....
I was lucky enough to meet Javier Bardem one night in San Rafael when he was barely known in this country. He was gracious, charming and the best looking man I had ever seen. But the best thing about him was his heart. l He is willing to stretch himself as an actor, "No Country for Old Men", "Before Night Falls" and the "Sea Inside". I admire him tremendously!
