If this sample scene is any indicator, heroic fantasy/sword and sorcery fans may have the film they've been waiting for.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know, CONAN THE BARBARIAN with Ahnuld aka Arnold Schwarzenegger is considered somewhat of a classic, albeit a campy one. But they juggled the baddie in from another one of Howard's heroic adventures, and pretty much screwed up the finer details. This time out though, the original content of Howard's SOLOMON KANE character looks to have been well preserved, and it seems that director Michael J. Bassett (Deathwatch, Wilderness) may have hit a homerun if early reports are anything to go by. People lucky enough to have already seen SOLOMON KANE have some pretty darned positive things to say about the film, and it's only served to raise my expectations and anticipation. Read Todd's review from TIFF '09 HERE, to get an idea of what to expect. If you are like me, at this point you are greedily snapping up any scraps being thrown. I've been doing the pee-pee dance for months now, waiting for SOLOMON KANE to finally hit theaters. It's torturous given the fact that distributor Lions Gate has no firm U.S. release date set yet, but again, word has it that a screen adaption of a Robert E. Howard sword and sorcery tale has finally been done right.
I cant' wait to see Max Von Sydow, Alice Krige, Pete Postlethwaite, and lead James Purefoy get medeival on our asses. Lions Gate, please please please RELEASE SOLOMON KANE SOON!

And now, without further delay, scroll down and check out this new tasty morsel, a full clip, which shows the titular 16th Century Puritan demon hunting hero, and his party, navigating a very creepy Hall Of Mirrors.

I'm so pissed that I skipped this one instead of The Gentlemen Broncos at Fantastic Fest. I'm also miffed that it played only once.

[sigh] I miss Rome.
This movie looks pretty good. It must have had a pretty small budget though. It looks like they did pretty good work with it.

I thought the film was just okay. The opening scene prepared me for some swashbuckling fun, but most of the film takes on a super serious tone (Slow motion crucifixion!) and relies on an muddled episodic structure. It doesn't help that Solomon himself is ham fisted hero that is supposed to be the best of the best, but he's constantly ambushed and knocked out. His reliance on saying one line over ("Oh god!")...and over...and over...as opposed to approaching anything with a sense of fun rubbed me the wrong way.

Lol, @ JustinPD, I totally understand your comment about:

"Solomon himself is ham fisted hero that is supposed to be the best of the best, but he's constantly ambushed and knocked out. "

I feel the same way about the hero One Eye in Valhalla. Even though I haven't got a chance to see it yet, they describe him as a viking with superhuman strength, but in the trailer, he is being held captive with a little rope around his neck.

Don't tout the hero as "best of the best" if he is getting his ass handed to him for a good portion of the movie.
