HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE COUNTDOWN: #3 THE WIRE: THE COMPLETE SERIES

I cannot wait to dig back into this show. When HBO told me they'd be willing to send it long I felt almost guilty. How much great television should one man have access to? Many feel this is the single greatest show in HBOs history. It may be even better than that.  You get all 60 episodes of the series, on 23 discs including all previously released special features, and cast/crew commentaries plus three featurettes and a gag reel.

If that seems like not a lot of love it might be a good idea to withhold judgement. This was intended to be very complex stuff created with al most no regard for the types of conventions normally associated with dramatic TV. Don't look for clear cut endings or resolution, don't look for simple preachy homilies to explain away the complexities of human frailty and sin. Don't expect to walk away unchanged. Especially don't expect to pick this show up somewhere in the middle and be fully rewarded. This is, by all accounts, serious TV for serious people.

No! No! No! No! No! This is the single greatest show in TELEVISION history. (Well, apart from The Sopranos. I keep changing my mind on that one. Wire? Sopranos? Let's just say they're the two finest TV dramas of all time.)
