Viy: The Return (Вий: Возвращение) was 5 years in production, it had changed its genre from horror to mystical adventure, producers promised that it will be Pirates of Caribbean set in quasi Ukraine of 18th century, they also said that they filmed 2 continuations, even thought the first one was not released yet. And when the news came that it will be in 3D, i didn't even know should I believe it or not. And now they published 2 scenes for sequel Viy 2: Cursed Place (Вий 2: Проклятое место) in anaglyph 3D. Viy: The Return will be probably the first stereoscopic movie in Russia after the pause in more than 20 years. The second pretender is Dark World (Тёмный мир).The early 18th century is a time marked by the struggle of modern science to overcome superstition. When British cartographer and scientist Jonathan Green (Jason Flemyng) travels to the wilds of the Far East, he stumbles upon a village nestled in an impenetrable forest. There, he is told stories of a terrifying creature with a gaze that can pierce a man's soul, a creature known only as "Viy". Despite warnings, the pragmatic Green sets off towards the boarded up local church in an attempt to disprove the stories. What he finds there confounds science and imagination, a horrific truth about the village and its people.
So take your anaglyph glasses and enjoy scenes.
Viy: The Return should be released on 18 February 2010. Viy 2: Cursed place should be released in 2010, exact date is unknown.

So, has the first one released already?
Do you know if it will have English subtitles?...I didn't even know about this movie 'til today, 1/11/10. thanks for the info and I really hope to purchase this as soon as it's available. I finally purchased the original Viy: Spirit of Evil by Ptushko though I had it on my computer for a while with downloaded English subtitles. Are there any other Russian films like this? I have several of the bizarre Alexander Row (Rou) movies and a couple of Alexander Ptushko films but never seen anything 18th 19th century-ish with a horror edge. Recommendations would be appreciated!
thanks for the info! I kind of figured as much although it's a shame that Russia doesn't produce more horror....or even more folk/faerie tales....love to see a production of Phantoms by Turgenev at the very least. Or a fantasy/horror fictional film on Vseslav Briacheslavich the "werewolf prince" 1044-1101. Mario Bava's "The Wurdulak" is an excellent Russian tale albeit made in Italy if you haven't seen it. I have the Russian language version and am trying to bid soon for the American language version because it has Boris Karloff's voice as vampire Gorca and my videotape version actually broke a few years back.
Ummm, does anyone know if "Viy: The Return" is out on DVD yet...and also if it has English subtitles? I want to purchase it as soon as possible!
