There are two directors named Chris Smith who have become favored children of the Toronto International Film Festival. One is the fiction director who helmed horror pictures Creep and Severance. The other is the documentarian behind American Movie and The Yes Men. After viewing Collapse, it will be a little more difficult to tell them apart.
From the documentarian, Collapse is a portrait of the life and theories of Michael Ruppert. A former cop turned investigative reporter, Ruppert has spent years analyzing economic trends and predicted the current economic collapse with startling accuracy years ago, when the mainstream majority of economists were still painting everything with a rosy glow. And what Ruppert believes is coming next is not pretty at all.
Like the best work of Errol Morris, Collapse is as much a portrait of a man as it is a dissection of ideas and it is Ruppert that makes this engine go. A classic outsider prone to paranoia who sees conspiracy everywhere, a key element in Ruppert's persona comes when he tells the camera flat out that he doesn't deal with "conspiracy theory". No, he deals with "conspiracy fact". The disturbing thing is that given the accuracy of his past predictions, he just might be right.
Collapse begins a limited theatrical run November 6th. Check the trailer below!
