As well as the feature films competing for the Silver Melies at the 23rd Leeds International Film Festival, there were also seven shorts in competition to be nominated for a chance to go on to win their own Melies D'Or. Again, Leeds is the only UK film festival affiliated with the EFFFF, the European Federation of Fantastic Film Festivals who select the contenders for the Melies awards.
And this year? The nomination for best short film - as selected by director Simon Rumley (The Living and the Dead and Red, White and Blue), myself, Matthew Lee aka Eight Rooks and Doctor Alison Peirse from Northumbria University - went to Italy's Pathos. Created by production team Illusion, it's a chilling little seventeen minutes that while not exactly new - imagine being trapped outside the Matrix, desperate to get back in - still manages to be a triumph of mood, pacing, and tension.
