A Purchase would be Sagacious: Saga of Swamp Thing Book 1

by Canfield, November 4, 2009 5:00 PM

This came out last February but since volume two will be coming down the pike this December I thought I'd remind everyone just how awesome this Swamp Thing series was. When it comes to monster comics Swamp Thing - especially this incarnation of him- is the place to start. I love Werewolf By Night, Tomb of Dracula and others but this was high art, the very best that comics ever had to offer for monster fans. Collecting Alan Moores beginning work on the series into a gorgeous slim hardcover, textured sleeve and comic print pages this isn't oversize but I can scarcely do anything but praise it. This literally changed comics forever. Want to consider the influence of Lovecraft, and the huge place horror comics currently occupy in comic culture? You can't do better than make sure you've perused and deeply considered the art contributions of Stephen Bissette and Rick Veitch and Moores unbelievable writing. Collects Issues 20-27 and has absolutely fascinating intro essays by Ramsey Campbell and original series editor Len Wein.

Yeah, Moore's writing on this one is sensational! I wasn't that happy with the art at first but grew to admire it. How is the planned SwampThing film developing, twitchers?

Hey, fhoom, was the initial reason behind not liking Bissette's artwork to do with the original run having Wrightson artwork? Personally I always loved Bissette's work for all the detail in Swamp Thing's form. I'd love to see a new Swamp Thing done in a less campy manner of the original films.

Kidlazarus, I found the faces to be bland an uninteresting, and the style of drawing and coloring kind of badly aged...but the details, the organic psychedelia and the shading impressed me. I might have liked Wrightson a bit more than Bissette, yeah. What fantastic tales Moore spun there. I really hope the film happens and is worthwhile.

Yeah, hands down, no one is really on the leveI with Moore. I hear you regarding the artwork. I have the old tpbs of the Wein/Wrightson run and Moore/Bissette run. I definitely think both have coloring issues. Wrightson is better with facial expressions, but, I prefer Bissette's design for Swamp Thing. Wrightson's Un-Men are phenomenal.
