Now... I just finished essentially ripping the entire recent output of Korean omnibus films to smithereens, but things like these make you change your mind pretty fast. At least on paper.
Seems like we'll finally get to see something by Jang Joon-Hwan, as he's been selected for an omnibus melodrama tentatively called 부산 프로젝트 (Busan Project), set to debut next spring. Said omnibus will see PIFF head honcho Kim Dong-Ho participate in the 1.5 billion won production, and as the name suggests, focus on dramas with the beautiful city in the southeast of the peninsula as their background. Other than the madly talented director of 지구를 지켜라 (Save the Green Planet), we'll get Thailand's Wisit Sasanatieng of หมานคร (Citizen Dog) and ฟ้าทะลายโจร (Tears of the Black Tiger), along with Japan's Yukisada Isao of megahit 世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ (Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World) and GO.
Sasanatieng's film will tell the (slightly insane sounding) love story between a drag queen secret agent and a terrorist, Yukisada's will pair up a DP with his new belle of choice, while Jang's is about a former archery athlete - so, what, Bizarro world 태릉선수촌 (Taereung National Village)? Yukisada might have turned a tad too syrupy in recent years, but the other two names are a no-brainer when it comes to quality, so could be quite the interesting little project.
