Hot girls, big guns and bigger f'n creatures. That's the blend of ingredients for Assault Girls, the new live action feature from Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii. With a cast that includes Oscar and Golden Globe nominated actress Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Assault Girls is the feature length expansion of a previous Oshii short in which strange, angelic women - heavily armed women, it should be added - are battling enormous sandworms in a post-apocalyptic world. The earlier teaser for this showed promise but seemed to include some unfinished effects and was generally just poorly encoded, which made for poor visual quality, and this new theatrical trailer is a big step forward on both counts. There still seems to be some in-progress effects work included - no surprise given the film's impossibly tight production schedule - and the budgetary limitations are obvious but so is the sheer force of Oshii's vision.

First 10 secs I thought wow this looks great, after that it became really boring FAST. This reminds me of a combo of Final Fantasy Spirits within and Casshern. I really dont like the CG and real footage combo. Looks cheap and fake.
I think mamoru should focus on anime, he kicks ass with that, with this I dont know yet. Plus I dont like the masked voices (audio of voices when the characters speak into the helmet) same was with Skycrawlers. The English was horrible and not natural.
wow ok ok enough negativism :S
as far as the movie itself goes, I felt more interested in this movie by just the teaser.
besides my interest level, this has the feeling of a trailer for a short film. there's very appearance of feature length content, mostly girls blowing up monsters... which don't get me wrong, could be enough content to satisfy me if it's done right ^_^
A girl with black wings and a bowler hat? I'm in.
I'm with illlogic, Ginormous, um wings, and a black bowler eqauls sold. Plus I'm still totally in love with Rinko Kikuchi from seeing her Brothers Bloom. And I'm a closet fan of Oshii's Avalon.
EGH... this looks corny... I want to kill something when that freaking J-Pop rubbish starts...
...pass.
J-pop rubbish will likely stink up the ending credits only.
Is Oshii working with Kawai here? Trailer music might be different than the film, but sounds a tad too soft to be Kawai.
Is this for PS3 or 360?
I'm fairly sure that's a piece of 'trailer music', as in it gets used a lot... can't place it though.
Avalon's wildly over-rated but I like the look of this. Can't decide whether to laugh or cry that he seems to have basically asked for some money to go and produce a cheapie live-action knockoff of Monster Hunter though.
looks only good to tickle the cute girls with big guns fetish.
While I still like the look of this, is all they do are snipe sandworms(whales?) atop an ashy hill? Unless Oshii is keeping things under wraps, I can understand the concern for this one.
Granted there are budget limitations to consider as well.
That music might be the one boisterous/rousing "choir" piece that rips off Carmina Burana, that I actually like. Still don't know what it is...
But man I will never understand why the Japanese have such awkward music transitions. Sure, J-pop sells, but... *sigh*
why does he have to do another avalon with philosophical undertones delivered in a hamfisted way ?
Sky Crawlers was a gem of a movie and this seems like he's trying to play it different and campy for this one, I mean, it's called assault girls. I cried nerd-tears of joy while seeing this trailer. every other camp movie gets embraced but when Oshii does one it has to be "serious" and people staring into the sky for 10 seconds ? And I don't care about the special effects, that's just no argument for me if the movie is entertaining and good. Avalon had bad effects as well. but look at the angles/rythmn in the shots and you can see a very good director working.
Love it!
Love it love it love it!
wow that looks terrible. oshii really needs to stay away from live action. i know there are a lot of avalon fans out there but i thought it was awful. this looks worse.
Has anyone here seen any of Oshiis other live action work. All I see mentioned is Avalon. I prefer his Live action work to his anime. Don't know about this yet though.
The trailer looks awesome, in a schlocky way!
Hopefully the movie will live up to it.
I love the fact that they are fighting liopleurodons.
