The All-Singing, All-Dancing, Transvestite Secret Agent Returns!

The though came immediately to mind when X posted last week that Tears of the Black Tiger director Wisit Sasanatieng was contributing a short film about a drag queen secret agent to a Korean backed omnibus film:  "Oh, Lord.  He's making an Iron Pussy film!"  It seemed a safe bet because - let's be honest - how many transvestite secret agents are there in the world?

The creation of Michael Shaowanasai - a Bangkok performance artist - Iron Pussy has been brought to the big screen once before as a feature film co-directed by its creator and acclaimed arthouse helmer Apichatpong Weerasethakul.  Brash, colorful and intentionally camp, Pussy is a cross dressing, singing and dancing secret agent sent around the world on difficult missions.  But while the Weerasethakul film is certainly not without its charms you can make a pretty good case that the character and tone of the film is very much at odds witht eh directors regular style and so there are a few hiccups along the way.  But Sasanatieng?  Sasanatieng's hyper-colorful, playfully absurd style is a perfect match - an absolute dream pairing of material to director.

And so I went straight to the source on this one to confirm and it's true.  Sasanatieng's entry in the Busan Project anthology will, indeed, be a new Iron Pussy film, one currently going by the temporary title of Iron Pussy: A Gimji Affair.  It can't come soon enough.
