Though they may seem an odd or unlikely pairing on the surface, Versus star Tak Sakaguchi and Love Exposure writer-director Sion Sono have long worked in the same circles.  The two cult figures not only share the same manager but are also both good friends with gore-meister Yoshihiro Nishimura, a friendship that not doubt contributed to Sakaguchi's involvement on Sono's Love Exposure as action choreographer.  Yep, all those crazy up skirt photography sequences?  Those were Sakaguchi's doing.  And now Sono is returning the favor by co-writing the script for Sakaguchi's next directorial effort, The Blood of Wolves.  Here's how it's described in the AFM guide:

THE BLOOD OF WOLVES is planned as a "super genre movie" Samurai Action Drama mixing original sword action with the latest CGI and exquisite special effects makeup.

By integrating swordplay, monster, zombie, and kung fu, we will create an intensive action experience and an extremely entertaining thrill ride that remains exciting from beginning to end. For co-scriptwriting, film director Sono Sion, who has won many Awards around the globe. Production crews are currently planning outrageous "real contact action" and Action Team Zero's, led by Tak Sakaguchi, rocked the world with its terrific action scenes in BE A MAN! SAMURAI SCHOOL (08), YOROI SAMURAI ZOMBIE (09). Edgy hard rock music will elevate THE BLOOD OF WOLVES into a realm of pure excitement.
24 Frames Per Second dug up further plot details:

Samurai Seijyuro walks a lonely path with an eerie wolf he calls Jyubei. Elsewhere, the muscle-bound Genbu has fallen into evil ways and transformed into a terrifying incarnation of absolute malevolence, having betrayed his own family and transformed Seijyuro's father into an animal. Meanwhile, female ninja Kurenai, one of the top members of the Geiga Clan, approaches Seijyuro with a cunning plan. The time has come, and a fateful battle begins. Will Genbu die in order to fulfil his destiny? How will Seijyuro's destiny be determined by the blood of Wolves?

Still listed as in pre-production, The Blood Of Wolves should shoot in early 2010.

Sakaguchi's directorial efforts have been uneven at best so it's good news to hear that Sono is giving him a hand with this next one, which sounds pretty darn cool story-wise... Samurai, curses, morphing, fem ninjas? Yes, please, I'm game.
