STINGRAY SAM Online Today!

by Todd Brown, September 15, 2009 6:00 AM

Though I'm not quite certain what time today it will appear - or, for that matter, how long it will remain available for - today is the day that Cory McAbee's latest sci-fi musical western opus Stingray Sam becomes available for sale and in a wildly counter-intuitive but pretty damn awesome move they're giving it away for free.  All you've got to do is mosey on over to the official site and enjoy!

Seriously??

I'd be surprised if it really was the whole movie though. More likely it's just one episode (the movie is comprised of six of them).

Nevertheless, I urge everyone to go check this out. Remember "Stingray Sam" won the second place at this year's Imagine Festival (with the winner being "Let the Right One In"). And seriously: each episode is a shitload of fun.

OK, I checked it and it's more like a "live"-event. The film will stream once in its entirety and be followed up with a Q&A session.

Technically speaking you could record the whole thing on your Mobile Phone (which would be quite "Meta" considering the philosophy behind the film...) but don't be like that.
Buy the thing proper, give Cory loads of money so he can quickly make another film.

Yep, he turned me into a fan and all it took was a single screening...

Definitely want to see this, but I have a problem. What time zone are they representing? 10pm where? Seriously, when doing live streams on the web you can't expect your audience to be local.

"At 7PM PST on Tuesday the 15th this billboard will host a live broadcast of our theatrical premiere of STINGRAY SAM from the theater. Following the event, if you have a question you would like to ask, feel free to join the conversation by entering the chat. The video chat option will allow you to be projected onto the theater’s silver screen."

From the blog. It did the time math for me. Slick. Problem solved. I know what I'm doing tonight.

Yeah, definitely not free. It's $8 just for an iPod quality download.

Aw crap, that's like... 5 AM where I live!!!!

bnl771,

The viewing this evening (night for me...) is, in fact, free. It's only when you want to download the film for keeps that you have to pay.

The stream is in the middle of the night for me as well, I believe 4am-ish. I'd really like to see it though as it might just push me to get that deluxe set thingie just to support Mcabee (well ok, that t-shirt would be fun to wear too). I have to wonder if their servers can take the load though - would hate to have it lag and sit in front of my pc for nothing at 4am.

Also, I noticed they are really embracing the whole digital aspect and their store lists American astronaut for release as a download in October. This is really great since the only dvd release of it has been out-of-print for ages and way too few people have actually seen it.

Hmmm... I'll probably shell out for the special edition too and buy American Astronaut (which I haven't seen yet).

I hope this business model works out for Cory McAbee!

for god's sake someone give this guy a huge sum of money. i think i'm going to start by buying the digital version, i like this idea a lot and i appreciate the design of the shop and displaying of all the technical details of the file. very well thought out. loved the american astronaut so i'm buying based on that.
