Seems that, when he's not busy orchestrating Olympic Games openings or Communist Party anniversary parades, Zhang Yimou even shoots films, from time to time. His next in line is quite peculiar, not so much because 三枪拍案惊奇 (Amazing Tales: Three Guns) is divided into two parts dealing with completely different genres (a suspense thriller and a comedy), but rather for its inspiration, none other than the Coen Brother's debut Blood Simple. The film, which started shooting last June, stars Sun Honglei, Ni Dahong and Xiao Shenyang.
It all sounds pretty wild, with Ni Dahong playing a stingy tavern owner who hires Sun Honglei's character to kill his wife (Wang Xiaohua) and the waiter she slept with (Xiao Shenyang). Still no release date announced, but we have the first few stills. [Sina] [163 Ent]

I remember (in a Grandfartherly voice) when "Blood Simple" premiered and critics were very much divided. Most people didn't know what to make of it. As such it's not a surprise that it could be turned into both a suspense and a comedy.
