A look at the annals of Chinese cinema's controversial fifth generation and you'll find plenty of interesting stories to tell, but Sun Zhou's is amongst the most intriguing. After working on TV in Shandong and shooting a popular drama, Sun suddenly quit and moved to the renowned Beijing Film Academy, from which he graduated in 1986. But with no job in sight and the prospect of unemployment, Sun started shooting commercials, which slowly but surely won him the attention of his peers (from the film world, that is). Chen Kaige was one of the fellow 5th gen. alumni who brought him back to the big screen, when he cast him as the Crown Prince of Yan in his epic 荊柯刺秦王 (The Emperor and the Assassin), after which Sun finally moved to directing, namely the 2000 film starring Gong Li, 漂亮妈妈 (Breaking the Silence). Sun has continued directing films and TV dramas and even acting, but it seems his latest work might prove to be his most interesting yet.

Release is set for October 14, but in the meantime, you can take a look at the badass teaser.

I wondered where Sun Zhou had gone. Both Breaking the Silence and the subsequent Zhou Yu's Train were unfairly slept on I think. And what a great comeback vehicle the former was for Gong Li.
