Fantastic Fest 09: MIRAGE MAN To Kick Again! In English! And 3D!

by Todd Brown, September 26, 2009 2:42 AM

Big news today from Fantastic Fest where, before the world premiere screening of Mandrill the team dropped a bomb on the crowd.

Mandrill, you see, is the new film from the team behind Chilean martial arts superhero flick Mirage Man, a film that took home the Audience Award when it screened at Fantastic Fest two years ago.  And when the Mandrill crew arrived the first thing they did was start hanging posters.  But not for Mandrill.  No, instead they hung posters for a film called Defender 3D, a film that is a proposed English language remake of Mirage Man.  Even better, word is that they'll be screening a 3D trailer for the film in front of Mandrill.  Directed by Andy Cheng the film features star Marko Zaror performing in English for just the second time in his career and captures his martial arts acrobatics in three glorious dimensions.  Yes, Mirage Man is coming to America and going 3D.

More details - and hopefully the trailer itself - as we get them.

Defendor 3D - not to be mistaken with the Woody Harrelson super hero flick, Defendor, that screened at TIFF?

Loved MirageMan and Special, but the concept is dead now. Too many of these emerging at once.

Andy Cheng (Jackie Chan Stunt-Team mainstay for several years turned Hollywood action director for 'Welcome to the Jungle/The Rundown', 'The Scoprpion king', 'US Seals 2', 'Twilight') at the helm with marko Zaror in the lead, kicking ass and in 3D...I'm sold already!

Zaror is amazing, but Mirageman was a mess. Shallow soap opera story and amateur filming. Andy Cheng onboard is a serius improvement, and he must have already worked with Zaror, who did all of the Rocks coolest moves in Rundown.

I assume this is the same Andy Cheng who wrote and directed 'End Game'.

I thought MirageMan was brilliant. Ernesto Díaz Espinoza direction and script were excellent. (Anybody know when the dvd is coming out?) I don't see why a remake has to be made and I can't see it topping the original. I could go for a sequel though.

FF, you must be from Chile, cierto?

Lol, fhoom, actually my background is Filipino. Perhaps the soap opera formula is in our blood. I thought it was like a jab-homage to the superhero/vigilante genre which can be much like a soap in terms of relationships with the news media. (Superman & Lois, Batman & Vicky Vale, etc...) Much of the look of the film was a jab at the cheesy (yet nostalgic for me) 70's live action Spiderman show, starring Nicholas Hammond, which had some quirky angles and cuts. There were many silly moments and heartfelt as well for me. I thought Espinosa tread the line pretty well, and Zaror can fight and act. We'll see about the remake, (nothing against Mr. Andy Cheng, of course!)

FF, I just had a similar exchange of opinions with a Chileno on another site. He agrees with me that the story and filming wasn't very strong, but liked the Chilean humor and details, and doesn't want the film to be remade cause he feels it would loose the Chilean charm. I don't actually think it was useless, but pretty amateurish. Ok for newcomers but the script could have been a lot better. Sure it had its moments. And Zaror can certainly fight, he's amazing, specially for a guy that big. Not sure about his acting skills but i bet Cheng can make him look really good.
