Fabrice Du Welz hits London for a VINYAN Q&A - plus see it for FREE!

by James Dennis, September 24, 2009 9:06 AM

Anyone who's seen Vinyan, Fabrice Du Welz's follow-up to the fabulously bonkers Calvaire, may well wish to ask the Belgian director a thing or two about it (probably in a rather stern voice). Well now's your chance to get some answers in a live Q&A with the man himself on Friday 25th September, following a screening of his psychological horror pic at the Prince Charles Cinema in London.

If you can't make it to the bustle of central London, fear ye not, as Revolver Entertainment have ensured you can watch the entire movie for free on Lovefilm.com between 7-10pm the same evening. Better still, you'll be able to pose questions live as you watch the film online. The top three will then be posed to the director in the cinema during the Q&A (also being streamed through Lovefilm).

You can buy tickets to the screening here and check out the details of the Lovefilm stream here.

Vinyan is getting a limited theatrical release in the UK on 2nd October and is out on DVD and Blu-ray from the 5th October.

I did a fabulous (in my mind) interview with Fabrice back in the 2008 TIFF debut of the film. Alas, swallowed into the ether by a faulty USB recorder that corrupted the file.

Either way, it is more interesting to get Du Welz's philosophy on horror and horror filmmaking than the nuts and bolts of plotting and narrative, because Vinyan works best as a fever dream than as a literal story.

There is a shot in this film that blows my mind everytime I see it. It's the aerial shot as the couple enters the creepy tree house. The cameraman literally drops through the roof and then continues on with a steadycam through the house following the wife. Amazing!

Rustdog, you just hit the nail on the head with regard to that particular scene. It's incredible. Love the "making of" feature and seeing how it was executed. Unreal.

Definitely feel this movie is far underrated and has a lot of undue venom directed toward it. Vinyan is flat out beautiful film-making.

This is/was a top ten o' the year for me.

So nice to see some love for VINYAN, certainly one of the best of TIFF '08, and one of the better horror/dramas of 2008 (or 2009 DVD).

VINYAN was terribly underrated and vastly misunderstood by most of the horror loving audiences that saw it. Even at the other site I am staff at, which is horror-centric, it was not only disliked, but hated.

That said, I love it.

As far as the streaming Q and A, what time does that shape up to be here in Seattle, WA, USA?

by the way, James, thank you for the heads up regarding this Q&A. Was an interesting thing for them to do. Seems they will upload the Q&A, too.
