New Extended Trailer for VAN DIEMEN'S LAND

by Rodney Perkins, September 7, 2009 8:32 PM

VDL_FinalPoster1.jpgJonathan Auf Der Heide's true-life Australian cannibal tale Van Diemen's Land is set to have its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest in a few weeks. A new extended trailer has appeared, giving a better idea of what this rather amazing movie is actually like than the older, shorter teaser. The new trailer is on the top, but be warned: it shows someone eating "man roast."

Would you look at these wide angle shots! This deserves nothing less than to be seen on the big screen. Damn it, I wish I was at FantasticFest.

Wow. I'd heard of this, but that trailer instantly made this one of my most anticipated movies. I'm a real sucker for beautifully shot "heart of darkness" style films: Aguirre, Sauna, Ravenous, Deliverance, Vinyan etc. Can't get enough of it.

Well, Russian cinema has a hell lot of it, and i don't like it.

I wish I was at FantasticFest. Me too.

Me three, the lineup is insane.

Well, I have to admit this one certainly slipped under my radar for some reason but, good lord, does that look something special or what?

For anyone on the lookout for a future DVD release, it may be worth keeping an eye on.....

..... which, on the one hand, is an Australian online shop but the 'Madman' group themselves seem to be the major domestic distribution party behind the film to begin with. As such, one can only assume that it'll probably make it's first DVD appearance through their own store?

I've ordered a couple of otherwise relatively hard-to-obtain items from them in the past and have received the discs all the way from Oz to here in the UK within, a frankly astonishing, 2 working days (!) and the prices ain't too bad at all....

Seems to be a new trend, setting foreboding horror / intense drama in good old Tasmania (where I'm from). It's honestly a beautiful, wonderful place.

Hello All,

If anyone's interested, the Australian DVD of 'Van Dieman's Land' is now up for pre-order at...

.....for the sum of $34.95 Aussie dollars (circa £19.28 British Pounds, $32.08 US Dollars or $34.13 Canadian Dollars), excluding shipping of course. Assuming there's no delays, it's scheduled for a release on 20th January 2010 by the looks of things.

Ordered!

Good looking out on this! I do want to see this in a theater. The other good news is it appears the dvd is stacked!

also, I notice madman has Last Ride available. fantastic. The director's blog is pretty killer: www.glendynivin.com

Yep, true indeed; I think the sheer vast scenery in Van Diemen's Land alone certainly deserves to be seen in a Cinema if possible but there's only one, admittedly very good, arthouse cinema even relatively local to myself and it ain't on their schedules for the next few months at least, so the likelihood of it turning up at all is pretty slim.

It's funny you mention 'Last Ride'; I've got 'Samson & Delilah' & 'Lake Mungo' on order from MadMan at the moment along with Van Diemen's Land but when finances (hopefully) allow in the coming weeks, I'm fairly certain I'll put an order in for both that and 'Lucky Country'....

I'm in Philly we have 3 theaters under the landmark banner that generally cater to arthouse fare.
This year looked loaded with great films from down under: Van Diemen's Land, the Horseman, Last Ride, Lucky Country, etc. Nothing doing in as far as either fest and I don't see any in the pipeline.
The two film fests we had this year weren't really to my liking. Usually I go to 10-15 films, this year: 1 film and 2 programs of short films.
