Lionsgate to KICK-ASS

by Ben Umstead, August 17, 2009 8:03 PM

Just a few short weeks ago Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of Mark Millar's comic series, KICK ASS was a film without a home... Word was grim or at least non-existent regarding when Vaughn's independently funded flick was going to get a release (anywhere!). The film's extreme violence involving children indicated that it would be a tough sell to studios stateside.

Last week rumors were flying that three studios were vying for the U.S. distribution rights. Now news comes in today that Lionsgate has nabbed 'em. Love them or hate them, the up and coming mini-mogul plans to fully back the film with a wide release sometime in 2010. As long as the film goes uncut I'm happy.

It makes me wonder whether they're planning on selling it to the general public as 'from the writer of Wanted' (I mean, Lionsgate do the Saw films, yes?) or to the geeks as 'this is his work done right'.

Not that I'm that bothered either way, I hated Wanted the film and thought the graphic novel was appallingly bad. But I'm still curious.

We'll just have to see. I'd assume they'd play up both angles.

My two cents: Wanted the comic and film did nothing for me. Kick-Ass thus far has been a fun read and I can actually see working better as a film.

I'm also in the Wanted the comic is over rated. If the film had kept the super villain angle it could have been better, but I didn't care for that either. This looks great and I can't wait.

the film is just Millar's in concept, it all depends on the execution. Looks to me like the combination of Vaughn and Cage will be spectacular.

On one side, I'm bummed, cause from what I can tell this is a concept I wrote up 15+years ago, and my stupid lazy self never finished it. Shame I missed my chance.

On the other side, I don't care I missed out, this looks FANTASTIC and I'm glad to hear it'll get a full release!

It would be great if a film like this got a big push and not just an uncut director's DVD after a butchered theatrical run. Not holding my breath but it would be nice.

Thanks Tyler

This things just keeps looking better and better and after seeing that trailer thanks to Lionsgate for having the balls to take this on. It looks like a John Woo film with a 10 yr old playing Chow's part.

It looks like it's got the makings of being exciting on the surface and deeply disturbing underneath.

They have balls in acquisitions, but their marketing department needs to be fired. Into the sun.
