FRIGHTFEST 2009: A Note On LA HORDE

by James Dennis, August 30, 2009 12:33 AM

Much covered on Twitch, French zombie horror La Horde screened yesterday to a hungry crowd at Frightfest as a sneak preview to the upcoming 'world premiere' at the Venice Film Festival.

We saw the film in its entirety.

Reviews are embargoed until the Venice screening.

Read into that what you will...

God I hope it's good. The premise alone should make this a solid.

That's frustrating! I don't have much invested in this one, as it looks like a pretty cliched zombie actioner, but I hope to be surprised as I'd love to see the current run of great french horror continue. Malefique, Inside, Martyrs, Calvaire, Vinyan etc are easily some of the best of the genre this decade.

As a little Belgian fellow I can't stress enough that Vinyan and Calvaire are both Belgian films! We don't have much to be proud of, so don't take these last rays of hope away from us!

Uuuuh no thanks, I think I'll give this one the old skipperoo..

i saw it at frightfest too. I had fairly moderate expectations but enjoyed Frontieres. I have to say i was pretty blown away. Extremely slick, well crafted horror. The French are clearly leading the way, what with Martyrs and A l'interieur, and now this - showing they can inject life into genre horror like the much worn zombie movie.

ps - as a humble Brit i recommend Hush - superb horror

really loved all the above mentioned french and belgian horror truffles:) been expecting la horde for ages. btw, HUSH is tightly edited but the script had me laughing from time to time. it was fun but not horror.

Onderhound, don't forget the Dardenne brothers... two of the finest directors full stop. And they're Belgian!!

Onderhond, my mistake, thanks for clearing that up for me :) I've been a bit confused about Fabrice Du Welz' nationality for a while, perhaps because his films are Belgian/French co-produced.

Been looking forward to this movie for a while now.
What was the name of a different french movie, where its winter/snowing and a wife or a husband has their spouse in an ambulance. And one of them are infected or something?

That's Mutants. Interesting, but pretty badly flawed.
