Fresh Trailer For Aron Gauder's EGILL!

by Todd Brown, August 14, 2009 5:20 PM

Oh, you sly devils ... being a massive fan of Aron Gauder's satiric Hungarian hip hop animated musical The District - it's amazing, seek it out - I have been checking the website for his in-progress film Egill - based on the violent life of a legendary Icelandic poet in the Viking era - a couple of time a week for literally years now, waiting for something new to turn up. And now it has, though very quietly, the webmasters simply swapping a new trailer in at the link where the old one used to lurk without giving any exterior indication of the change. So, thank you Catsuka for noticing.

This is an entirely new trailer, English friendly and obviously intended for the export market. Still rather brief but it does showcase Gauder's unique animation style. Find it below the break!

Looks weird. Like an in-game cutscene with mocap that has not been cleaned up and has a toon shader thrown on top. Reminds me strangely of Ralph Bakshi rotoscoping.

But the subject matter looks great. Went to the website and checked out some other clips like the "pilot" which was pretty cool.

What the hell are you talking about?

i liked the old material on the website but the trailer is pretty lame. and is it only me or is the picture mixed up? it's 4:3 but should be 16:9

Yeah, if you've got several tabs open and log in on one you might end up logged in but it changes to one of the other tabs. It's a bit annoying, but I don't mind it too much. Keeps you on edge.

This looks like a vid game cut scene, agreed.

It's going to have to really pull a rabbit out of the hat for me to take any real interest.

Dig the subject matter though.

Animation seems kind of clumsy, yet strongly artistic, and the action looks like it could be nice and kinetic. Very nice designs, and the tone looks more intriguing than any viking based material I've seen. Including Beowulf, Thirteen Warriors and certainly the lame ones Pathfinder and Outlander. The other one looking very promising is Valhalla Rising.

right you are, i have to get a hold of those Raven films somehow. Hrafn = Raven?
The Kormakur thing should be interesting too. Don't know if you saw the Norwegian film Pathfinder was based on, it was much better. Kind of slow and more about the Samis than the vikings, but a well told story. It amazes and depresses me that the man who made Pathfinder is now about to direct the next Conan movie.

This looked horrible.

@Swarez
"So weird to see foreigners tackle local subject matter and doing it with more love and care than anyone over here would."

Speak for yourself - I know plenty of Scandinavians that would nail this with 10x more passion and skill than old Gaudy there.

Stagstar, so why dont they, heh? look im scandinavian, but i dont live there, so im not up to the latest...but as far as i know there's not much going on in the area. Now if you check out the site and all the videos, your opinion of this project might change. No lack of passion and skill, there's obviously an epic being told. So what if the animation is not to your taste, if you got it? Anyway there's icelandic people involved in this project too.

And are they? It's all well and good to say you know this guy and that guy that might handle this stuff better but Gauder is actually doing it it. Which is more than those Scandinavians you know are doing.

Todd;

Weird I thought I was leaving a comment for Legion. I know my comment sounded bizzare sorry.

don't apologize Gene, that comment added some welcome extra random abstract humor.
