The trailer for the US remake of the Danish film "Brødre", simply called "Brothers", has popped up online. There is no shortage of big stars in this one, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman (yes please) and Tobey Maguire and the thing is being directed by Jim Sheridan of My Left Foot and Get Rich or Die Trying fame. The story is revolves around when a woman finds out that her husband (Maguire) has apparently died in Iraq and his brother (Gyllenhaal) comes over to help her out, seeing that she has two kids to take care of and all. Time passes and the two start falling in love but then they find out that the dead husband and brother isn't really dead after all (oops). This clearly puts a damper on the relationship between them but the "dead" brother is a changed man when he returns and seems to be craving human blood and flesh. Ok that last thing was a joke but things start to escalate to dramatic heights is all I'm saying.
The original film was written by Twitch favorite Anders Thomas Jensen and its director Susanne Bier but I have to confess that I haven't seen the original.
Check out the trailer after the break.

I like how it starts off, but the tonal change is really something.
But I do feel like I've just seen the whole film in that trailer.
Dammit. I read your post so fast that I missed the "I was kidding" part after you wrote that Tobey Macguire craved human flesh.
... and then I watched the whole trailer waiting for him to start eating other human beings.
ah haha. u know what, the story sounds like Pearl Harbor, which in turn sounds like some Bollywood melodrama.
that is a great cast of actors!
I saw this trailer before 'Public Enemies' this weekend...and I have seen the original, so I was like....wait, I've seen this one. I suppose its a compliment to the original (which was very good, btw), to be remade for an American audience, but it would be nice if the American public in general could accept a foreign film as is. You really can't beat Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.
Was that Natalie Portman in a bathtub? (Sorry got distracted)
Is it me or when anybody sees Jake Gyllenhaall I think either Donnie Darko or Brokeback mountain?
Hmmm... Not a very good trailer, and the music is yucky. Portman looks odd and too young, Maguire looks insane and weird, but Gyllenhaal looks the part. But the original is a must-see along with 'Elsker dig for evigt' and 'Efter brylluppet'
I'm with rk89 and dbo77. Any interest in seeing this movie is quelled by the trailer, which (appears to) show the entire arc of the film. And talented cast/director aside, rhetorical question, why can't American audiences just see the original?
Also, the 'craving human flesh' bit would have sold me. Someone get on that, if we got to remake something, let's do it the right way.
Loved the original. This one looks like a pretty much shot for shot remake. The trailer does tell the entire film which is dumb. Tobey Maguire looks amazing in this though, I really didn't think he could pull off something like that. Portman looks too young, and Gyllenhaal doesn't seem have the character right, he seems too... unmessed up? is maybe the word I am looking for, just not dodgy enough really.
Wow. Hollywood sure knows how to ruin a good European film. Shouldn't judge from just the trailer, but the everything just seems off. Oh well, at least they can't retroactively wreck the original.
Now I know why God invented dirty bombs.
Pull the pin.
THis plays like one of those THE SHINING trailer remixes. Weird.
Jake isn't so bad, but I find it hard to believe Jake and Tobey can even slightly match the original performances of Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.
