He's barely put out a good film in a decade though and even at that it's been nowhere near the caliber of his early success...this troubles me when it comes to expectations.
My concern is the word 'Prequel'. The original was great because it was the unseen-the unknown, that helped terrify. The later films lost that edge as the creature became common and brought out into the light. I don't think an origin story will help that cause...
a towing crew? come on, lets all just say it. we all know we wanted the story of the Goliath sitting in the gun chair, with a hole in his chest. the first question i asked myself when i saw that movie, was "how in the hell did they kill something that huge". guess i'll never know =(
Alien and Blade Runner was Ridley Scott's best era. He's been hit or miss since then, sometimes doing films I suspect purely for the money, but after some bad sequels and that AVP crap this is the best news this franchise could possibly hope for. He should call up Giger to do some concept art.
Would be great to also see return a visionary artist like H.R. Giger to the project ... so I guess now the movie has got the studio behind it to enter the script stage after a "pitch" ... I also guess the further "attachment" of Scott as director or his success to intelligently resurrect or re-boot the Alien mythology will depend a lot on the strength of the new ideas and writing ... Besides that, the green-lighting of the project and Scott in the seat to direct should be great news ...
No way it turns out as good as Alien. The Era ia over, one has to consider, it's the creative team who's making the movie. It's not Scott alone. So without Giger, without the very good screenwriter, DOP, Cutter, and Producer, it can turn out very easily as Gladiator in Space. Bring the good people back, take less budget and just pretend you're young and you want to change the world with your film. Maybe then it works out.
Scott has been dead for years. Doubt he will resurrect. Just 3 (awesome) films and he becomes the most overrated director ever. And after he directed that movie called "Piece of Crap" (released internationally as Alien Director´s cut), I don´t think he is up to any good. Have not been for over 20 years.
Please be a Godfather II and not a Godfather III, please be a Godfather II and not a Godfather III, please be a Godfather II and not a Godfather III...
*sigh*
I keep my fingers crossed. Let's hope he can beat Fox in the obvious and impending production battles that will occur.
Ridley Scott is definitely overrated, since the days of Alien. he made two very good films - Thelma & Louise and Gladiator. that's it.
Alien and Blade Runner are really triumphs in art direction, not direction. as movies, they're pretty damn boring. as visual feasts, they're endlessly gorgeous. both movies have no dramatic momentum whatsoever.
Hey this is fantastic news! Whilst much of Ridley Scott's recent stuff is indeed over-rated, it will be a great opportunity to see if Scott can still achieve the sort of work he once did.
sorry, but blade runner aint that good anybody makes it out to be. on the contrary, for me, it's very boring and a heap of lost opportunities. what stays are the visuals....but that's not enough to trust r.scott completely.
WOW! That prequel synopsis sounds AWESOME! I'm so glad that outline doesn't resemble the first film in anyway because in the first film the crew of a commercial vessel is awakened from sleep to investigate a distress signal on a nearby planetoid....oh...wait a minute.
Prequels with back stories to movies that don't need back stories are rarely a good idea...Hannibal Rising or that awful Halloween remake anyone? Some things should remain mysterious and unexplained.
oldnick I'm glad you have faith that this project will be handled properly. Unfortunately I don't. The movie business has changed a lot since Alien was made, with so much now decided by committee based on how things went in focus groups. Hollywood can make big shiny, glittery, eye-candy spectacle movies no problem but they have real problems making GOOD movies anymore.
Arch..
Faith is all I have!!
It's gotta be better than the AVP dross!
I just want to immersed in Ridley's Alien vision again, I remember the 1st time watching Alien, scared the shit right outta me, I had to sleep with the light on the whole night, convinced an Alien was coming out of the shadows! Then when I was old enough to appreciate it as an adult, then as a designer I got something new from it each time. I have to hope Ridley can rescue the franchise and inject something completely fresh into the story.
fingers X'd!
The sequel that the original deserved, Men in Black 3 is not exactly fresh, but it is an honest journeyman's effort by director Barry Sonnenfeld, and features a peachy-fine performance by Josh Brolin, who easily outshines putative star Will Smith. That in itself is something of an accomplishment; Smith has been so hell-bent on creating and maintaining a bad-ass...

Now that the Razzie Awards for the worst films of the year have devolved into cheap shots at easy targets, perhaps it's time for their foreign equivalents to carry on the torch. Consider France's Gérard Awards, which, at the very least, have a lot more fun with the titles of their prizes. They also manage to put a few awards-darlings...

Oh, and this is definitely "WhuuoooAAAHHHH?!!!"-category news for me.

Now let's hope this will be the first Alien film where the creature isn't killed off by some silly biddy. The weak point of every Alien film so far.

This is good news. All we need now is a new Predator movie.
well, good luck then (to mr. scott), he will need it.
