THE HANGOVER. Best Comedy Of The Year?

by Todd Brown, June 4, 2009 6:20 PM

I certainly think so. In fact I'd say The Hangover is the best comedy to come out of Hollywood since The 40 Year Old Virgin and may well be even better than that film, though I'll need to let it brew a bit and see it once or twice more to see how it ages to say for sure. But, without a doubt funny as hell, incredibly well written, and anchored by three central performances that turn what could have been a threesome of walking punchlines and turns them into full blooded, flesh and bone humans instead. I really, really like this movie and my detailed review just went up as my weekly column at Showcase.

This was good? Really?

Yup. Laughed my ass off, the actors were all really solid, script was really well written, DP was the guy who shot The Chumscrubber and Garden State so it doesn't look or feel like a typical Hollywood comedy at all ... really solid on all levels.

Seriously? I had no intention of seeing this film at all!

And I love this kind of film (loved 40 Year, Superbad, Knocked Up, even Sarah Marshall...), guess it was the trailers that made it seem too over the top to enjoy (like that kid at the party who's trying way too hard to be cool).

Surprising to see it come so highly recommended... maybe I'll check it out after all.

Couldn’t disagree more. Saw it Tuesday in NY and thought it was awful. Boring, recycled jokes. Zero chemistry between the cast. No surprises/tweaks to the tired “what happens in Vegas” theme we’ve seen in a million other movies. Most of the jokes/joke set ups are in the trailer. It played like an extremely weak OLD SCHOOL. Plus they gave Galifianakis a nutty “character” to play instead of just letting him do his shtick. HATED, FRAT HOUSE, and OLD SCHOOL are great but Todd Phillips hasn’t made a good movie since. SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS anyone?

Zach Galijguyfytnakis could read the phone book and make it hilarious, looking forward to this.

I thought there were scenes in the movie that were really funny, but the movie as a whole just does not come together and gel for me. It's certainly worth a watch, but far from being a must see IMO.

It looks like it wants to be Very Bad Things without the edge that movie had. I could be wrong but that is what the trailers make it look like to me.

The 40 year old virgin and all it's spawns suck, not my type of humour at all. So, thanks for the warning.

That's one almighty shittily photoshopped poster!
