Colour me intrigued with Martin Scorsese's actor-studded, gothic horror-thriller-mystery Shutter Island. The trailer popped up on Apple.com today and begs the question: Where else could the assemblage of Michelle Williams, Max Von Sydow, Leonardo DiCarprio and John Carroll Lynch occur in the same film other than a huge directorial draw like Scorsese? (Oh, did I mention Mark Ruffalo, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Ted Levine, Elias Koteas, Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley? Yea, they're in here too. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Asylum!) The film is genre-y and classy at the same time, and I must say, I am digging it. A lot. This is simply handsome craftsmanship. Come fall we'll find out if Scorcese has something more than just a spooky story up his sleeve. But for now, that will do.
Two U.S. marshals are summoned to a remote and barren island off the coast of Massachusetts to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a murderess from the island’s fortress-like hospital for the criminally insane.
The trailer is in the Twitch Player after the Jump.

I have read the book by Denis Lehane a while back and it was fantastic, and from the trailer I can see that the movie seems quite faithful to it. I can't wait!!!
for some reason, rather than a "new age" sorta method actor, leo feels more like a really bonkers-intense clark gable. whiffs of Shining's horror through spaciousness toward the end there?
Yes please. But I'm guessing Leo is the 67th patient.
after the awful, awful Departed, i wouldn't be surprised if this one turns out unintentionally funny.
"awful Departed"? Time for another viewing, The Visitor.
I read the Lehane book as well and while I was a bit disappointed with the last chapter or two, it looks like Scorsese will amp up the story nicely with the proper dose of tension and paranoia.
And Swarez, kind of rotten to post a theoretical spoiler before the film even comes out.
So you don't think the trailer gives away the plot? I haven't read the book, didn't know it was based on one, but if I turn out to be right then your beef is with the creators of the trailer.
I hope I'm wrong though.
Looks like another fun time at the movies, and the trailer didn't ruin it for me at all... Is it just me or the way it was shot reminds me of The Green Mile...
Another DEPARTED fan here. Can't wait for this - looks fun, but yeah - trailer seems a might revealing. Who knows, though?
wow
Cuckoo, you do realise right, that Swarez was just taking a wild guess, so he's not the one who gave away a spoiler. you did.
btw, guys, the greatest horror movie of this kind, about an asylum (or former asylum) and about insanity, is Brad Anderson's SESSION 9.
KILL, MARTY... KILL!
Scorcese stopped doing good movies since Gangs of New York, so, i really don't care about him anymore.
The Visitor - notice I wrote "a theoretical spoiler". So, no.
Nothing wrong with theoretical spoilers in my book; a little discretion in the editing of the trailers and there would be nothing on which to base a theoretical spoiler.
This irritated me about Moon and Terminator 4 and Bruno as well - why do we need to see so much of the movie before it arrives? In this instance, there is really no justification for more than a couple of teasers. Marty and Leo have built in box office draw.
I don't dig the horror flick looking poster (I'm thinking Ring 3) with the "viral" sounding caption. Anyone else feel like this kind of advertising - ambiguous imagine, strange question, no reference to the actual product, and a date - feels tired rather than edgy.
I haven't heard anyone call The Departed "awful" before. Nickolson's performance in was laughable (they should have given the role over to someone else, like Winstone - Jack, like Pacino and Dinero, has become a caricature of himself), however Damon and DiCaprio were interesting counterpoints.
Chevalier,
i switched off Gangs Of New York after the first 10 minutes. the MTV quick zooms told me Scorsese had lost it.
I'm definitely up for this. Loved the book (anything by Lehane tends to be pretty a-ok in my book) and am definitely not a subscriber to Marty bashing. Agreed, The Departed felt a bit like coasting for Scorsese, but by anyone else's standards it was a great film. Gangs of New York, again, although no great shakes by Scorsese's standards, was pretty damn watchable. But between the two was the fantastic The Aviator, which really was Scorsese on top form. I've got my fingers crossed for this one.
looks like every other psychological thriller to come out in the recent years. and that trailer just shows too much. ive never liked scorsesse movies and i dont think will change my mind but i guess well have to see
trailer looks good, but leo needs to change his appearance or i'll ever have the feeling Titanic-Jack had somehow got off from the sea, survived the beach, then somehow got back to the underworld of new york to start a awesome career as an aviator and now he's getting older and fatter and finally insane... he's a good actor, but his appearance kills his acting... in my opinion.
