Russian SciFi Action Flick SMERSH XXI Gets A Whole Lot Slicker And a Brand New Name.

by Todd Brown, June 25, 2009 11:42 PM

It was more than a year ago now hat Twitch first broke news of upcoming Russian scifi-action hybrid Smersh XXI. Details - beyond the fact that it took its title from a Russian WWII military security organization - were sketchy at best and getting any sort of read on the project was beyond difficult thanks to the trio of in-progress teasers that each showcased a completely different aspect of the film. These were so different, in fact, that they could easily have been from three entirely different films.

Well, those original teasers are gone now as is the film's original title. Now re-branded Запрещённая реальность, which translates roughly to Forbidden Reality, the film is nearing completion and a Russian release and that can only mean one thing: a proper trailer. The temp effects are gone, replaced by a very slick package that still appears to veer pretty wildly between its different elements but there is clearly some sort of alien or parallel universe force at play here which the heroes are drawn into battle with using a variety of means. This could be fun.

Check the new trailer out below the break!

Looks good, I have been looking for more stuff to watch from Russia after seeing Daywatch and Nightwatch, really enjoyed those movies.

I lover Russian movies, and this film looks great.

Looks decent, but can't really tell much without subtitles. Awesome action, though.

Wow it looks like two completely different movies spliced together. Going to be interesting to see how it all holds together. The action looks brutal and excellent though.

Here's early sales reel with terrible English voiceover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpFlEkMJIqk It has more footage.

BTW, the English title is The Interceptor. Here's an article about it on Screen Daily: http://www.screendaily.com/rex-media-kicks-off-sales-on-russian-interceptor-trilogy/4041848.article

Strange to see the the polished CGI version first and then the early one. Thanks for the link to YT. Looks good anyway though, so I'll look forward to this.

I too see the Timur-factor in this... but I'm one of those few that thought that both night and daywatch was some of the most wasted jumbled mess in history of cinema. Yeah, they looked nice, but I had no clue as to what was going on. And most of the effects felt like they were put in just to pad out the screen-time.

But this article isn't about Timur, I know. So I'll say that this trailer does show a lot of potential. Maybe they take the visual side from Timur that worked and leave out the messy plots and unmotivated effects that didn't work. I'll continue to have my hopes up for this, but at the same time I hope I'll actually be able to follow the finished product.

Again... I like what I see here in this trailer... :)
