V: Attention all alien races. If you're hot we welcome you to take over our planet!

by Andrew Mack, May 20, 2009 5:20 PM

I was 10 years old when 'V' first hit the airwaves in 1983. It has been a long, long time since then and since Hollywood is obviously on track to remake everything old new again we welcome our lizard overlords once more as 'V' is set once again to hit our television sets next television season.

ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson says his network's remake of the 1980s miniseries "V" could consist of four seasons, planned in advance, each with 13-22 episodes each. The show is planned for midseason. THR

Your guess is as good as mine how they're going to carry it for four seasons but when it comes to beating the dead horse they're at the top of the field. I digress, two clips from the upcoming show came out yesterday and we've embedded them below. Take a gander. Yes, that's Morena Baccarin from Firefly in the role of the lead alien. May I then be the first to volunteer to greet our new lizard friends with the customary tongue kissing ceremony. Tee hee.

There better be a Michael IRONSIDE cameo. If it is going to be remake cheese, I want my Hamm! (nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.) Just sayin' that the original version holds more weight as nostalgia than as a quality production, and the TV show was embarrassing. I'm fine with the Battlestar Galactica style-reboot on this one. And interesting casting in the Diana role.

They should start remaking remakes. I mean if you're not going to bother creating new source material, then at least poke fun at how desperate you are to keep the monster alive.

"V" has been a prime remake candidate for years, I know, but that doesn't make it right.

Fuck 'em.

I was pretty surprised, mainly at just how much it feels like Battlestar Galactica, and on that note I'm in, especially counting the number of recognisable faces in these two short clips.

Question is, can it do for V what Battlestar Galactica did for itself, or will it turn out to be a poor remake?

i know i am a lone voice in the universe in saying that: the Battlestar Galactica remake series sucked goat balls.

the original series was always fun and sometimes even silly, but it was a real delight, and you grow to like the characters and anticipate each situation they get themselves in week after week. and you anticipate the Big Finale when they would, or would not, find Earth.

with the new BSG, it was all shaky cam and seriousness, taking all the fun out of the series by trying too hard to imbue some realworld politics. it was PLAINLY BORING. it had none of the spirit of the original, and worse of all, it had no imagination. all it did was try and top the original with snazzy special effects (is it that hard to top some 80s special effects? come on) and an unnecessarily complicated plot and some sensuality. it's the same damn problem that plagued Scorsese's horrible The Departed. the remakers took the fun out of everything.

and so, i have no hope whatsoever for V the remake. it's going to be total shit.

I've got high hopes for this. I was a big fan as a kid, even though the series kinda fell apart. I still think its imperialistic overtones are pertinent for today. The cast is strong and the effects look passable, though not up to BSG standards.
Lets hope it works.

p.s. The Visitor = shallow end of the kiddy pool.
