Somewhere, sometime soon, there's gonna be a DVD release of Miike's ...?

by Andrew Mack, May 14, 2009 5:01 AM

In a quick flurry of e-mails between myself and Outcast Cinema's Marc Walkow I found out he has been hinting at an upcoming DVD release of a very popular Takashi Miike film over the past week. In fact, he's been over in Japan meeting with Miike recording commentary for the film; he has also met and conducted interviews with Ren Osugi and Renji Ishibashi about the film. Then on yesterday he dropped the biggest hint of all and posted a couple images of the lead actors from said film- Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina!

Yes, though he cannot give details about this DVD release we now know that somewhere, sometime soon, there's gonna be a DVD release of Miike's Audition and Marc has been meeting with principal cast members and the director conducting new interviews and recording new commentary. Sweet!

Because there aren't nearly enough DVDs of AUDITION. Heaven forbid putting out something, I don't know, previously unreleased.

Agree with Rhythm-X , Audition has been out on DVD for a very long time, as have Sabu, Ichi, Great Yokai War, Izo just to name a few off the top of my head that have been out on DVD for a very long time, so its not really news if its not something that has not been released yet...

Yeah, I'll buy it. BUT, I'd also buy a decent release of Like A Dragon, Waru, Man In White, Puzzle of God, and the few that are missing from my collection before that. I have three different versions of Ichi the Killer for some reason.

I don't understand why no label has picked up Man In White. It's easily one of his best works. Hell, this is one of my favortie Japanese films period. Audition was good and this might be worth just for the interviews, but still release some other films first. Again, someone please release Man In White. Great film.

Release Man in White, Like a Dragon and Crows Zero, then i'll get happy.

Tokyo Shock already released Crows Zero in March. 33% happy?

I'll be happy if Criterion put out Audition, I haven't seen a decent print of it yet. Both versions are ugly. If they remaster the print and do a decent color correction, I'll double dip, but that Lions Gate offered nothing new, only that fucking idiot Eli Roth talking.

The UK Tartan Extreme and the German release had decent enough video, at least. I always used those to point out the differences between editions.
The scene in the restaurant where the audition plan gets hatched is a good example.

Now you see a background (using one of the two releases above), now you don't (any other release...)!

While I agree that it'd be nice to see a bunch of other Miike movies on disc, there hasn't been a Region 1 AUDITION with a nice transfer, interviews, audio commentary or any of the other stuff it deserves. I don't know the specs on this disc, but I think AUDITION is such an important movie in Miike's career (it practically made him a brand name overnight in the US) that it should have a big, fat important disc to match.

Now if only someone would release YATTERMAN...

As long as we're making requests...

Shangri-La please! Aikawa Sho as king of the homeless giving comeuppance to greedy landlords? A no-brainer, and especially timely given the grim economic news and US housing crisis. And not available anywhere on DVD, so no parallel imports to undercut it.
