Shoot Abel Ferrara Again. His Soul is Still Dancing.

by Kurt Halfyard, May 28, 2009 1:22 AM

Well, here is a combination of things. One, Werner Herzog is in a playful mood. Two, Nicholas Cage is attempting to outdo his recent Wicker Man remake role in over-the-topitude. And three, Abel Ferrara's fabulous Bad Lieutenant does take itself deadly serious with its earnest violence, aggressive sex and extreme drug use, flirting with parody in the first place. This culminates in one of these 'O My God, they are actually getting paid to make this' moments (and not only the eccentric director, but also Val Kilmer, Eva Mendez, Jennifer Coolidge and Fairuza Balk. I am not sure how funny the joke or the Freddy Got Fingered stunt is going to play out in the end, but give the trailer a gander after the jump and weigh in. Who knows, maybe this is not even real but a strange You Tube mash-up or an hallucination.

"You don't have a lucky crack-pipe?"

Apparently Herzog has been puffing away, and get that iguana of his fucking coffee table.

(This will make almost sense after a viewing. See you on the other side.)

Oh God, Cage only gets worse. Although it may be good for a cheap chuckle, this really looks like a right piece of rubbish. Cage must be stopped. Someone hire Golgo 13.

Wow, this just looks...bad.

More than Cage being so laughable, just what in the fuuuuuck is Herzog thinking? I hope he got a fat paycheck for this. Or something.

Eek.

The dvd extra for this film will hopefully be a full fist fight between Herzog and Ferrara, because this film does seemed designed to pick a fight. But we get to see the hilarity around the release of this film which may or may not be better than the actual film. But batshiat crazy moments like this one come along so rarely these days!

holy shit i actually thought that was a fake mash-up from youtube , but its REAL haha, this looks kinda funny actually :P

user-pic

by hiring cage to act "seriously", you get one of the best comedians of all time.
this could be genius from herzog

user-pic

Herzog is looking for his new Kinski, maybe? The man is fast becoming an expert on nutcases it seems...

user-pic

Anybody else remember when Cage had talent and appeal? I used to like watching his movies.

I'm putting my hands up here, I pissed myself laughing at the "His soul is still dancing" bit.

But is that going to carry a film that's looking very generic?

user-pic

This movie will be pure LSD trip, you'll see. This is going to be Herzog's slap in the face to Hollywood style filmmaking, what he will do to Nic Cage's status and image no bad haircut in the world is able to do. This will be another Antichrist. I am so sold.

user-pic

That's the guy from Pimp My Ride, innit.

I bet the producers were thinking ‘Oscar’ when they got the director and cast. Or at least ‘serious, critically-acclaimed crime film.’

They were probably thinking that a film with this director and this cast at a budget of X dollars will automatically be good for international sales of Y dollars, making profitability almost if not completely inevitable, without taking into account the film's content in any way. Herzog and Cage can go as nutty as they want, as long as they keep it on budget. I'm pretty sure all concerned parties were on the same page with this film - with the exception of Abel Ferrara, who's just pissed he wasn't invited along on this gravy train.

user-pic

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^....And license to have a lot of wacky fun with it.

user-pic

^^^ If thats the case(and it is, or this would've never got past dailies), that is the sweetest deal any filmmaker can get. More movies should be made like this, for better or for worse(in this glorious case, both at the same time, in a way).

user-pic

I wouldn't be surprised if this is fake trailer cut together from bloopers & outtakes. Herzog is nuts, absolutely fuckin nuts. Maybe he's pupsoefully trying to upset Abel after all the threats made when the news was first announced. I also wouldn't be suprised if this isn't a fake trailer and Herzog went so far to make a an entirely shit film just to Spite Abel.

Will it be worse than Little Dieter Needs to Fly? Yes, probably. Will it be more dignified than Next? Yes, easily... And yeah, it looks like a goofy fucking fun, mainly because the title Bad Lieutenant is slapped on there. It looks like Werner Herzog consciously decided to direct a straight-to-video sequel to a mostly respected Abel Ferrara film with A-list actors.

Where do I sign up for crazy?

user-pic

i don't get why everyone's so pissed off about this. it's so obviously a comedy. how can it be anything else?

i never doubt Herzog, and i never will. a guy who walked from Munich to Paris in the dead of winter to deliver a film to a dying critic must have something in him that no one else has.

user-pic

Comedy of the year. Right after seeing Xzibits face all i could think off was "sup dawg, i heard you like herzog...."

user-pic

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAAA! AWESOME!! this will be great!

user-pic

"I go to the French guy and the Italian guy and the Japanese guy. They all say yes and if I add up the numbers and it's more than the cost of the movie, with a little tax benefit from Louisiana, where we're shooting, then I'm a happy guy. It's as simple as that."

Good BLPOCNO-related interview with Avi Lerner from last July over at the LA Times: http://tinyurl.com/mtujks

I am so fucking sold on this.
Werner Herzog, you craaaaazy bastard. Why do you hate Abel Ferrara? Hahahahaha.
