Post-Cannes Catch-Up: SHERLOCK HOLMES versus THE ROAD!

by Todd Brown, May 22, 2009 7:48 PM

Now that I'm home from Cannes - I had to leave early and missed Inglourious Basterds, Enter The Void, The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, etc - the time has come to do a quick sweep for notable bits and pieces I may have missed while gone. And few could be bigger bits or more interesting bobs than the brand new trailers for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and John Hillcoat's The Road that arrived while I was out of the country.

A bit of a makeover for Holmes? You could say that, yeah. Ritchie has hugely amped up the action factorwhile also spiking a liberal dose of humor into his concoction and the resulting mixture looks rather fun indeed. How about Hillcoat's The Road? Fun is definitely not the right word here but it looks truly impressive. Find the trailers for both after the break.

I was hoping for an Enter the Void review from you, but oh well. From the Esquire article we know that the trailer plays up more of the mothers role in the movie and that the doomsday footage from the beginning of the trailer is not in the film, thank god. The trailer definitely makes it look like an action film. What an amazing book. October can't come soon enough.

Did you see Vengeance, Todd?

I'm bewildered by all the love I see for that SHERLOCK HOLMES trailer. I'd like to see how reaction would pan out if it said "A Brett Ratner Film" at the end but was different in no other way.

Man, I was hoping for an Enter the Void review from me! Got a couple leads on people who may be able to report in, though. We'll see.

And no Vengeance for me. Couldn't get in to two screenings. Word was generally not good, though.

That Sherlock Holmes thing looks stupid, like "League of Extraodinary (retarded) Gentlamen 2"

Man, the Sherlock Holmes Trailer looks totally retarded.
But you can't expect much from a director who remakes his first movie over and over again, getting worse every time he does.

Yeah, I don't see much to recommend Holmes either; I had frankly forgotten with all the RDJ love everyone had been feeling lately after iron man and tropic thunder, that the guy needs tight direction or can go off the rails sometimes. not that he isn't great, but this looks like he has the potential to get on my nerves by the end of this.

the whole holmes character has always been overrated, imho. in each book, he is smug and never gives anyone a straight answer until the big tiresome reveal at the end.

there is something wrong with the film quality or something in the clip as well - i'm sure they spent a load of money on it, but it looks cheap.

why does jude law keep getting second chances? he has been in mostly garbage for a decade or so. same with guy ritchie. they must both be praying that this thing makes some money.

LOL They turned "the Road" into Resident Evil.
