Cannes 2009: BUNNY AND THE BULL

by Todd Brown, May 16, 2009 5:13 AM

Make no mistake about it, though Paul King's Bunny and the Bull may not be screening here in Cannes the promo reel that sales agents Wild Bunch have brought along is so obscenely strong, so incredibly inventive, that this may very well be the big find of Cannes 2009. Mark my words: the second that footage from the film becomes available to the public fans of Michel Gondry and Spike Jonez are absolutely going to lose their minds.

King is best known so far as the director of cult hit television series The Mighty Boosh - of which I am admittedly not a fan - but here he pushes into strange, beautiful, imaginative new ' territory of the high-concept, low-tech variety that have become Gondry and Jonez' hallmarks without ever seeming to be lifting from their style at all. Edward Hogg stars as an obsessive compulsive and probably agoraphobic man who has spent at least the past several months of his life locked in his house. But this isn't to say that he doesn't have an active social life. Oh, no, he may be closed in but that can't stop him from taking imaginary road trips with imaginary (okay, mostly remembered) friends. This thing plays like a total treat, a beautiful mixture of charm and melancholy and brilliantly inventive visuals. And yes, Boosh fans, Julian Barrat and Noel Fielding both star as well.

Yum.

How can anyone not be a Boosh fan? Have you seen more than the first half of the first season? The thing with the show is how it constantly became better and better with almost every single episode. Have been curious about this film for some time so it'll be interesting when footage starts to show up!

I have to admit I never ever heard of The Mighty Boosh, but this sound pretty cool.

I hate hate hate The Mighty Boosh. Friends have repeatedly pushed it on me and I have repeatedly watched it to placate them - and I have consistently hated it. It's not even that I dislike Barrat and Fielding - it simply isn't funny. Prattling on about "ooooh my jam trousers, I've got trombones for ears, say that again and I'll punch you in the knees with a moped" is not humour, it's just lame. I'll probably give this a try though, never one to prejudge.
